A start was made on the third round of the Canterbury Cricket Association’s senior A competition to-day. The weather was dull but fine and after the rain that had fallen during the week the wickets were on flic soft side. Two of the games, Riecarton v. East Christchurch and St Albans v. West Christchurch were played at Hagley Park. Linwood and Sydenham met at Lancaster Park, and Old Boys and Old Collegians at Elmwood Park.

ST ALBANS V. WEST. Although the wicket was slow, the weather was fine to-day, when play commenced in the match between West and St. Albans. Dr Foster, having won the toss, Booth and Ilayes opened to the bowling of Sandman and Norrie. In Sandman’s second over Brunton snapped up Booth behind the wickets. 5-1-2. Ilayes was cbean bowled by Norrie after a patient innings. 3 7-2-6. Blank, making his first appearance this season, opened well and though quiet lie batted solidly. Play was slow and 20 was brought up after 40 minutes’ play. Baxter hit four singles before giving Crawford an easy catch. With the score at 21, Thomas relieved Norrie, who in six overs had taken one wicket for six. Sandman’s seventh over produced 10 runs, Blank hitting a couple of boundaries. Dr Foster and Blank looked like making a good stand at this stage, but Blank was stumped off Sandman. He had previously survived three appeals, but he appeared to be in bis crease v hen given out. 45-4-27. Ramsden survived two overs. 50-5-2. T. Condliffe then joined Dr Foster, who was batting well. CondUft'e stood and looked at an ordinary break from Sandman and had his stumps scattered. 51-6-1. Dr Foster was then given out on a doubtful leg before decision. 56-7-8. Jarrett hit a boundary and a single off the first three balls received from Sandman. With Findlay, he treated the bowling easily and this pair proceeded to make a useful display. After an attractive display for 10, Jarrett missed one from Sandman. Brunton did the rest. 79-8-19. Findlay was in good form and made a useful stand with Cocks, bringing up the century after two hours’ play. Norrie relieved Thoma sat 107, the over prod ucing three runs. The batsmen continued their bright partnership and 7 run swere knocked off Wood’s first over. Thomas came on at the pavilion end, but the change had little effect, the over costing 8 runs. Cocks was out at last to an off-break from Thomas. His partnership with Findlay had produced 71 runs and the stand made by this pair was invaluable. 150—9—33. Hawkes was dropped off Woods by Sandman when two. A few minutes later Findlay was bowle dby Woods after a fine innings for 43. Hawkes carried his bat for 6. Scores:— WEST CHRISTCHURCH. First Innings. Old Collegians won the toss at Elmwood Park this afternoon against Old Boys, and batted first on a slow wicket. The outfield was dead, and the pitch did not give the bowlers much assistance. The batsmen could not settle down to the bowling of Burrows, and Cromb, four good wickets falling for 48. Bruges went well for a while, but fell when trying to drive a fast full pitcher from Powell. Jackman and W. J. V. Hamilton carried the score along, but the runs were very slow in coming. Two hours’ play saw only .90 up. The remaining batsmen failed to impress, the innings closing for 110. I though the bowlers could get a fair amount oe turn on the batsmen had time to watch the breaks. Two wickets fell fairly cheaply, but a good dis--1 play of hitting by Gorrie improved matters considerably. A smart catch in the slips disposed of Roberts when ho was shaping well. Guiney and Powell then set up a partnership and ran smartly between the wickets. They added half a century before Guiney was bowled. Powell played a good innings though he had a fair amount of luck. The ta.ilenders did not make much of a showing and the innings closed at 4.50 for 206. RICCARTON. First Innings. A. Cox, c Phelps b Stringer 6 G. W. Haines, c Weston, b M’Kwin 15 D. T. Sydenham took first strike against Linwood, Robertson and Ayling being the opening batsmen. It. O. Talbot, who has returned to Christchurch for a few weeks, was playing for Linwood, and he and Read were the opening bowlers. The first wicket fell with the total at 27, Ayling playing a ball from Read on to his wickets. C. Oliver was the next batsman, but, after scoring three, he was caught by Kennedy off Read. 33—2—3. Patrick went in. He had scored three when he gave a chance behind the wickets, which Boon missed. Patrick and Robertson carried the score to 62. Then Robertson played forward to one from Read and was stumped by Boon. W. Oliver joined Patrick. Til's rate of scoring became deadly slow, and in six overs only one run was scored. Then Patrick scored a boundary off Read, and Oliver broke his “duck” with a couple off Orchard. The total was 70 when Patrick went out lbw to Read. Oliver and Hore, a promoted junior, then became associated. They were very slow for a start, but once they got set they scored more freely. When he had scored ten and with the total 94, Hore gave a chance off Read, but Bates failed to hold the ball. Oliver brought the century up with a couple off Kennedy. In doing so he gave a hard chance which Logie failed to accept. Oliver had 3 7 to his credit when he gave this catch. The hundred had taken 125 minutes to make. Oliver and Hore continued to bat on steadily until the total was 117, when Hore went out lbw to Kennedy. 117—5—25. Gasson filled the vacancy and Oliver livened things up by hitting Talbot for four and three. In the next over Oliver was bowled by Kennedy. 126—6—32. The seventh wicket fell with the total 129, King being clean bowled by Talbot. Sydenham were all out for 145, at 5.15 p.m. Scores:— SYDENHAM. First Innings. C. Ayling, b Read 4 O.
