Miss R. O. Goodwill, of New Brighton, left on Thursday by the s.s. Wahine to catch the s.s. Ulimaroa at Wellington for Australia, where she will spend an extended holiday touring Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Melbourne and Adelaide. Miss Goodwin expects to return in February next. The usual weekly dance and euchre party, in aid of the Sydenham Free Kindergarten, will be held in St Saviour's Hall, Queen Street, on Thursday evening. A large attendance is anticipated, and Reg Woods's orchestra will supply the music. Mrs Randal Woodhouse. who has been staying with Mrs M. 11. Godby, has returned to Bluecliffs. Mr and Mrs J. W. Niven have left for a visit to the North Island. Mrs W. H. Price (Fendalton) is visiting relatives in Wellington. Miss Phyllis Boucher, who accompanied Mrs Deans from England, is spending a few months at Riccarton House. Mrs IT. St A. Murray is paying a short visit to Wellington. Mrs W. 11. Clark and her children (Bealey Avenue) are spending a holiday at Hanmer Springs. Miss Gwen Mill ton (Geraldine) is the guest of Mrs George Helmore, Fendalton. Miss Tabart has returned to Christchurch from a visit to Dunedin. Mrs Mannie Wixon, Ki Tc Kangi, Tisbury, Invercargill, is spending an extended holiday with her mother, Mrs 11. Blair, IS7, Selwyn Street, Spreydon. Mrs Wixon has just returned from Stewart Island after seeing her husband away to the Ross Sea with the whaling fleet. Miss Katherine Gow. of Mosgiel, is the guest of Miss Christie, Redcliffs. Mrs R. M. Sunley, Bishop Street, is spending a holiday at Diamond Harbour. Mr and Mrs A. E. Knox (Wellington) and Mrs C. C. Paterson (Timaru) arc among guests at Warner’s Hotel. Mr and Mrs Preston Ilamersley (Western Australia), Mr and Mrs W. T. Smellie (Dunedin), Miss F. E. M'George (Dunedin) and Dr and Mrs Washbourn (Richmond) are among guests at the United Service Hotel. Recent arrivals at Warner’s Hotel include:—Mrs and Mrs A. E. The engagement is announced of -Kathleen, second daughter of Mr and Mrs S. 11. M’Kee, of “ Eyredale, ” Oxford, to Frederick, elder son of Mr and Mrs L. W. de la Mare, of Christchurch. An engagement was recently announced in Wellington between Hazel, only daughter of Mr and Mrs Geo. Jeffery, of Hataitai, and Hector, only son of Mr and Mrs P. G. Beaumont, of Christchurch.

A tennis match, arranged by Mrs J. C. Lord and Mrs Charters, was played yesterday afternoon at the Avonside Club courts between, the second IJ team from the Cashmere Club and a team of Avonside players. Although many of the players, unaccustomed to match play, were at first somewhat nervous, they gradually warmed to their work and a very pleasant time was spent by both teams. After some keenly contested games the Cashmere players proved victorious. Both teams were entertained at tea by the Avonside ladies. The Cashmere Club was represented by Mesdames Peppier, Ilal! Everist, M’Leod, Young, Ilodges, Miss Smith and Miss Witte, and the Avonside players were Mrs Barnes, Mrs Prince, Airs Wilkinson, Mrs Pearson, Mrs Bell, Mrs Thompson. Mrs White, Mrs Lauchland and Miss Smith.

Mrs P. J. Dunne is leaving Christchurch on Monday for Dunedin, where she will in future reside. Mrs Dunne was recently the guest of honour at a farewell gathering tendered her by the Play-reading Circle of the Canterbury Women’s Club. Mrs S. C. Owen, or behalf of the members of the circle, expressed deepest regret at Mrs Dunne’s departure from Christchuich, and, as a memento of the happy hours which they had spent together, she presented Mrs Dunne with a handsome theatre bag. Airs Dunne will be sadly missed at the Women’s Club, where her tact, her wide literary knowledge, and her histrionic ability were invaluable to the Play-reading Circle, of which she has been honorary secretary since its inception. The engagement is announced of Marjorie, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Donald M’Lcllan, I3av View. Napier, to Louis, younger son of Mr and Airs B. Toomer, of Christchurch. The engagement is announced of Doris, daughter of Airs E. Ruddock, 63, Walker Street, Ashburton, to Horace Al’Donald Scott, of the staff of the Ashburton High School.

A garden fete will be held on Saturday next at ‘‘Hillsborough," 101, Cumnor Terrace (near the railway station, Woolston), at 2.30 p.m. The organisers are working hard to make the fete a success and the funds are in aid of the Woolston branch of the Plunket Societ3'.
