BOY OF FIFTEEN CHARGED IN THE SUPREME COURT.
JUDGE DECLARES THAT ACT IS A MUDDLE. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, November 20. It was unique to see a small boy. under fifteen years of age in the dock at the Supreme Court this morning, having pleaded guilty to a charge of forging his employer’s name for 16s. The Magistrate, Mr Barton, during a sitting of the Child Welfare Court decided that he had no power to deal with a boy on an indictable offence. His Honor said that although this boy was thoroughly bad he agreed that it was very unfortunate that the Act was so worded that the Magistrate had not power to deal with these cases. The whole thing was a muddle and the Act wanted a thorough overhaul. The boy was sentenced to three years’ reformative detention, the Judge intimating that he would be placed immediately in the Borstal Institution.
