CHRONICLES OF THE WEEK

ARMISTICE DAY. Last Sunday a special parade was held in connection with the commemorative service at All Saints’ Church. Captain J. W. Crampton was in charge of the parade. The territorials, thirty strong, were under Lieutenant Taylor and the senior cadets, about forty of all ranks, were under Staff SergeantMajor Fretwell. HORTICULTURAL, SOCIETY. The committee of the Sumner-Red-cliffs Horticultural Society held a meeting on Thursday evening, Air T. E. Whitfield presiding over a good attendance. The secretary, Air P. G. Keig, reported that the schedules had been printed and distributed to the members. It was reported that the recent rains had been very beneficial to local exhibitors and that the prospects for a record show were very bright. The following judges were appointed:— Flowers, roses and vegetables, Messrs M,’Donald and Christensen: decorative and children’s sections (flowers), Mr A. F. Rasmussen; painting and floral designs, Mr A. E. Baxter; writing, Mr W. G. Bishop; cooking classes, Mrs A. E. Norton. It was reported that the campaign for new members was meeting with great success. BOROUGH PICNIC. At the invitation of the committee of the Sumner District High School, a meeting was held this week to discuss the preliminaries connected with the annual picnic. Those present were:— Mr W. C. Collins (chairman), Mesdames F. Barber and Pye, Messrs H. M. Williams and F. H. Mathews, of the school committee; Mrs E. A. Johnson, croquet; Mr H. D. Bates, bowling; and Mr G. F. Allen, head master. It was resolved to make inquiries regarding the grounds:—Pleasant Point. Christchurch Domain, New Brighton Racecourse, Stewart’s Gully and Kaiapoi Domain. It was decided to ask Air G. A. Alexander to secure information with respect to cost of trams or motor bus transport. LIFE SAVING CLUB. A meeting of the committee of the Sumner branch of the Royal Life Saving Society was held this week, Mr S. K. Bassett presiding over a full attendance. It was reported that the work about the pavilion was not yet completed and, on that account, the committee resolved to postpone the opening day till December 4. It was decided to hold the usual demonstrations of team work, and to organise side shows and a variety of stalls in the interests of the club. The retiring secretary, Mr A. F. Taylor, was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks for his services and Mr J. R. Hawken was elected to fill the vacancy. The meeting decided that the secretary should be the official representative at the opening of the New Brighton Club’s season.

j The Sumner Marine Band was thanked for its offer to play on the opening night. CROQUET. The local club played its first match of the new season on the local lawns against United on Thursdaj’, and was defeated by 3 games to 5. Mrs E. A. Johnson and Mrs J. Lee won their J singles and Mrs E. A. Johnson and Mrs J. Lee defeated their opponents, * Mrs Maddren and Mrs Murray Aynsley in the doubles. The supervisor of the croquet courts, Mrs F. T. Chambers, reports that the dance resulted in a credit balance of about £lO. BOWLING. I Last week on the local green the Sumner Club plaj'ed Kaiapoi, defeating their visitors by 3 games to 0, with a total of 59 points to 44. j BEAQII IMPROVEMENTS, j The beach improvements which are now being finished near the life saving pavilion are a very welcome addition to the main waterfront. Besides: a front wall, two lateral stone structures now enclose the area which is to be graded and top dressed. The Beautifying Association has donated £lO for this and the Returned Soldiers’ Association will pay a subsidy of £1 for £1 up to £SO as wages for returned soldiers employed on the work. The scheme includes the rockery and other planting. REDCLIFFS ACTIVITIES. The Redcliffs branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society recently conducted their annual canvass of" Redcliffs in the interests of the funds of the society, with the result that a total of £l6 7s 3d was handed in to the treasurer. The Sumner-Redcliffs Plunket Society are busy preparing for their annual effort on behalf of the funds of this important organisation. This will take place on Wednesday, December 1 at “Te Mai,” the residence of Mrs W. A. Beaven, at “ The Cutting," Redcliffs, at 2.30 p.m. Arrangements have been made for a Christmas tree and for variety and cake stalls. TAYLOR’S MISTAKE. Mr F. D. Kesteven presided over the annual meeting of the Taylor’s Mistake Surf Club. About fifty were present. The president congratulated the club on having no liabilities. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs F. J. Rogerson, G. Pearce, W. Reed and H. Bullin was appointed to report on the cost of building a retaining wall. Mr F. C. Atkinson was elected club captain and Mr F. J. Cook vice-cap-tain. The secretary elected was Mr J. Wallace and his assistant Mr K. Brown. Other appointments were: Treasurer. Mr H. J. Ballin: instructors, Messrs A. S. Cookson and L. Partridge; committee, Messrs G. Walsh. G. B. Pearse, O. Hooper, D. P. Lindsav, J S. Anderson, A. Thompson and A. E. Armstrong.
