The gentle libel that all Australians are racegoers was disproved by Mr Arthur Mailey, a member of the Australian cricket team, which arrived by the Aorangi (states the “New Zealand Herald’’). There was a kindly light in the eyes of most members of the party on hearing that they had been invited to attend the races at Ellerslie. Mr Mailey, however, was not enthusiastic. “T do not know a racehorse from a blackbird,” he declared. “Rut, what are the chances of a round of golf?”
