TENNIS TOURNEYS LIKELY TO CLASH.

AUCKLAND HAS TAKEN' NEW PLYMOUTH DATES. (Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, November 19 There are murmurings of discontent in Taranaki tennis circles at the receipt of news that the Auckland championships have been fixed for January 3 to 6. Tlie dates used last season were January 27 to 30, but, evidently with a desire to attract entries from players competing at the New Zealand championship meeting during the last week in December, the Auckland Association has decided to advance its dates this season. Taranaki’s grievance arises from the fact that its tournament has always proved particularly attractive to Aucklanders and most of the leading local players visit New Plymouth for the tournament, which in recent years had been held in the first week in January. Taranaki’s dates on this occasion are January 4 to S, and these clash with those recently adopted after some discussion by Auckland.

It seems likely, therefore, that the Taranaki tournament will be seriously affected. The position is a difficult one and cannot now be remedied. Taranaki and Auckland have co-oper-ated most amicably in the past and it will be a matter for regret if the clashing of dates causes dissension. The real remedy seems to be in the New Zealand Association exercising more control in the fixing of dates, as the associations know almost nothing of each other’s intentions until the fixtures are confirmed and published.
