M’Cormack, the owner of Tarleton, has purchased Nincompoop and Precious from Mr G. D. Greenwood, and they will be trained for him by J. Boyd. ❖ * * * A two-year-old filly by Martian from Love-a-Duck, an imported mare by Amadis, has joined F. D. Jones’s team at Riccarton. When ready to race, the filly will carry the colours of Mr Gilbert Grigg. Marsham, the two-year-old brother to The Cypher and Battlement, by Martian from Polymnia, is on the easy list at present, and the programme to l»e followed with him has not been decided yet. Mr J. F. Buchanan retained the colt with the object of giving him a chance at the stud, in the place of his sire, and it is possible that he will be retired without doing any racing * Starmist knuckled over and met slight injuries on the eve of the Can ter bury Jockey Club’s meeting. She is to be blistered and treated to a good spell. A similar course will be adopted with her stable mate, Goldstep, who has been a source of worry for months pilSt. J. B Pearson has Red Wink in regular work at present. He looks well and apparently he suffered no ill effects from his exertions in the Epsom Handicap last week. The Methven Racing Club has received a very satisfactory list of nominations for the meeting to be held on Saturday, December 4. Good fields are assured for the six galloping races, while there are more than thirty horses in each of toe trotting events. * # * * The Oamaru trainer. J. Ross, has John Bradbury and Solrose engaged for Mr J. Lindsay at the Methven meeting. Coeh-y-bondhu may make the trip from Orari for the Methven meeting, where she has two engagements. The stock of Quin Abbey, who dropped dead a day or two ago. won £82.155 in stakes during the last eight seasons.

The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting to be held on December 10 and 11. will attract a lot of attention from Riccarton stables. Nominations will close at eight o’clock on Wednesday night. * * * * R. J. Mackie has accepted a second retainer to do the riding for Mr E. L. Riddiford for the balance of the season. The first call on his services is held by Mr W. R. Kemball. * * * * According to a Hawera writer, the Native apprentice-jockey T. Tito is j making good progress, and it is expected that he will soon be fit to ride again. Tito had a leg broken some time ago. ; * * * * Black Ada is proving a remarkably good brood mare. So far she is represented by Novar. Clandhu, and Piuthair, all good winners. Mr R. A. M’Kenzie has a two-year-old colt from her by Absurd of whom he thinks very highly. The youngster recently suffered from a cold, and was turned out. but T. Lloyd was to take him in hand again on his return from Riccarton. Black Ada is now on a visit to Tea Tray. Rapine has now won £18,395 in stakes, so that, all going well, he is in a good position to place himself amongst those who have won £20,000. This is a fine record for a horse who was able to do no racing at all when five years, which might have been his best season. Dr J. Stewart-M Kay. the well-known equine expert in Victoria, wrote as follows before the Melbourne Cup (he did not know, of course, that Battlement had gone wrong, or that he was not in the New Zealand Cup) : “ There was one three-year-old that might have won the ('up. and that one was Battlement. He was the ideal colt for the job. for he has a Martian heart, no weight, could stand a -bump or two, I and had the Randwick mile and threequarter record to his credit. Not many j men have the courage to throw away I a Melbourne Cup, but Mr Buchanan 1 prefers to win the New Zealand Derby and Cup, and I predict he will.”

TROTTING NOTES. , l s Acceptances for the Forbury Park j Trotting Club’s meeting will close at c five o'clock this evening. # * ■ * # , The Otahuhu Trotting Club’s meet- , ing will be commenced to-morrow and concluded next Wednesday. Several 1 Canterbury trainers will have horses ? racing at the fixture. ❖ * * * < Having disposed of the New Zea- i land Metropolitan Club’s meeting at Addington, local trotting enthusiasts i can turn their attention to the New 1 Brighton Trotting Club’s fixture, which < will be held on December 16 and 18. 1 The nominations received this' week 1 make a great list. As usual, the slow i class races have drawn exceptionally < large fields, and with a number of 1 much-discussed maidens engaged, they ; will create a good deal of interest. The better class events have attracted a liberal response of good performers. S’fi % 1* * Happy Rosa had done all her racing as an unhoppled trotter. She has done most of her recent training with the pacing hopples, however, and her nomination for a pacers’ race at New Brighton may mean that she is to be tried in public at that gait. sje * * ❖ Bertha Bingen, the sister to Great Bingen, claims a trotting as well as a pacing engagement at the New Brighton Trotting Club's meeting. So far she has only been heard of as a pacer ,and the trotting nomination may be an error. * * * * Canterbury stables are strongly represented in the excellent list of nominations for the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting next month. Apart from numbers, they will provide the class at the meeting. * * # * The South Canterbury trainer. R. Townley, has Menember and Bonny vSpec engaged at the Wellington Trotting Club's fixture next month. The officials of the Wellington Trotting Club have reason to be satisfied with the response made by owners in connection with - the Champions’ Short Limit Stake, a mile and a half handicap with a three second limit. Eight ; i horses have been nominated—Logan ' Chief, Native Chief. Great Bingen, Prince Pointer, Waitaki Girl, Onyx and Imprint. Nothing approaching the class of this lot has ever been seen j previously at the Wellington Trotting Club’s course. * * * The Oamaru pacer. Brentloc, is J booked for a trip to Wellington next month, to tackle the leading two-mile events at the Wellington Trotting Club’s fixture. ❖ * * ❖ The Great Northern Derby candidates. Margaret Wallace, Peter Grattan and Great Peter, figure among the acceptors for the Mangere Handicap ! to be decided at Alexandra Park tomorrow. Peter Grattan and Great j Peter both had a race last month and j it will be interesting to see whether | they have made any improvement in ! the meantime. sl< * * The Australian-bred pacer, Direct : Morning, who was recently acquired from H. Henricksen by Mr S. Garland, is expected to have his first race in th Dominion in the Onehunga Handicap - to-morrow. Direct Morning registered some useful performances in Sydney ; and his form will be closely followed. [ ! AUCKLAND NOTES. (Special to the ‘‘Star.’”) * AUCKLAND, November 18. 5 J. Buchanan has an addition to his ‘ team in the shape of a gelding by Quin Abbey from Tinoreka. ~ There was a little jumping at Ellers- ' lyie this morning. Scot Free (Hastings) was schooled twice over a couple of 1 pon'.' hurdles and jumped well. Queen - Emerald and Golden Glass did a : round of the schooling hurdles, giving 3 a fair display. An unfortunate mistake happened at s l-eilding during this week, when Mr I M. Duties thoroughbred brood mare Ilupana was destroyed instead of the • aged mate Tiraumea. The latter, who ; is the dam of Takaroa, was over thirty

years of age and in failing health, and it was decided to destroy her, the borough ranger being commissioned to dispose of the mare. Ilupana, the dam of Miss Ilupana and others, was running in the same paddock as Tiraumea and she was shot, the mistake in iden-

tity being difficult to understand. When raced by her former owner, Mr E. Short, Hupana won several races, and her death means a severe loss to Mr Durie. The number two grass track was open at Ellerslie this morning, but there was not a great deal doing. War Officer and Star Comet ran half a mile in 50 l-ssec. Arch Arrow worked over six furlong alone in lmin 23sec. Boomerday and Uralla did a round, finishing together in lmin 47 l-ssec. Judge’s Box and Maveelish were together over half a mile in 51sec. Tall Timber went six furlongs, taking lmin 17sec. White Bird and Nancy Lee jumped off at the five furlong post, the former getting the best of the start. White Bird finished in front in lmin 2 3-ssec. Sea Comet ran the last six furlongs of a round in lmin 26sec. Mosaica and Aurumavis were together over five furlongs in lmin 3 Rahepoto. Abbey Day and Rina Manga finished in that order over five furlongs, run in, lmin osec. Template galloped a round, Cynelli joining in at the six furlong post. The last six furlongs occupied lmin 26sec. Archibald ran six furlongs in lmin 21 l-ssec. Newbury and Clarus finished together over four furlongs in 50sec. After breakfast King Merv ran half a mile in 51 l-ssec. Fair Abbey was in front of Muscari over a round in lmin 45 2-ssec, while Royal Form took lmin 49sec to traverse a similar distance. Princess Ronnie finished in front of Blue Sky over a round in lmin 50 3-ssec. The former was going very nicely. Bahama and Ototoa ran six furlongs in lmin 22 2-ssec. Namutere sprinted half a mile in 61sec. TROTTING IN AUCKLAND. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, November 18. Betty Moko went fairly well when she ran third yesterday in the trotters’ handicap at the Royal Show. It was the first run she had had in public for a long time, but she trotted in I her usual bold style and when the big Christmas meeting comes along she should be at her best. Direct Action has improved considerably during the past two months, and is trotting more solidly than when he first came from Sydney last season.

A. Hendricksen. a capable reinsman, is coming up from Christchurch to drive Miss Native and Billy Sea in their engagements at Otahuhu. Nobody will envy him his drives and if he can get the pair to leave the mark right he will have done the hardest part. Billy Sea would probably beat his field pointless in the Jellicoe Handicap at the Otahuhu meeting on Saturdayif he left the mark.

Goldman's performance in the pacing handicap at the Royal Show yesterday was one of the worst he has ever given. He was in difficulties at the end of a mile and eventually he finished last, a long way behind the field. At one time the chestnut was a solid little pacer and one of the best in Auckland, but he seems to be all to pieces at present. There is an inclination to look upon Dick Dillon as likely to get the major portion of the prize in the Massey Memorial Handicap on Saturday, but the chestnut will need to go better than he did at the Royal Show yesterday to win. Undoubtedly he is nicely treated in the handicap, but there are a few horses engaged who will have him at top all the way. St Maura, on the same mark, should be able to keep with the chestnut.

The trotting and pacing exhibitions at the Royal Show yesterday attracted considerable interest, but the trotting handicap, which was won by Peter Dean, was rather disappointing. All the starters, with the exception of Peter Dean and Betty Moko, left their feet once or more on the trip. Peter Dean, up till recently, was trained by J. Shaw, but a couple of weeks ago he went into- 11. Kinnamont’s stable. It was thought the horse had gone sour on racing, but he trotted in his best style yesterday aod had the race won half a mile from home.

It is to be hoped the officials of the Otahuhu Trotting Club were present yesterday and saw the performance of Billy Sea in the pacers’ handicap. As usual, when the barrier was pulled, he played up, but fortunately he was the backmarker and consequently there were no horses behind he could interfere with. On Saturday, in the Jellicoe Handicap at Otahuhu, he is on twenty-four yards, and if the stewards do the right thing they will instruct the starter to place the horse on the extreme outside of the track.

WINTON RACES. SECOND DAY. (Special to the “ Star.”) INVERCARGILL. November IS. Favourable weather prevailed for the concluding day of the Winton Jockey Club's annual fixture. There was a good attendance for an off day, the gate receipts disclosing an increase of £lB, but the totalizator returns were down £[•2s JOs for the afternoon, and £1953 10s for the meeting. After the Stewards’ Purse, F. J. M’Kay laid a complaint against the starter, Mr A. IX M’lvor, of snap starting the field, and not giving him a chance with Ecuador. The stewards exonerated Mr M’lvor. This verdict was fully endorsed by expert onlookers. In the County Hack Handicap, Bilbo always was most in demand, carrying three hundred and twenty-five chances more than Divinial, with Paris over one hundred supporters off, forty followers ahead of French Belle, but Rippling Lake, Strathnaver and Glenham all attracted good support. From an even start Glenham led Bilbo, French Belle and Paris at the head of a bunched field, to the straight. In the run home Glenham, under pressure, lasted long enough to win by a neck from the fast-finishing Strathnaver, with Paris fci bare length off third, a neck in front of Rippling Lake. Bilbo was next. The winner is a four-year-old son of Fleetham—Miss Glen, by Glenculloch. He is trained in Invercargill by the old-time cross-country rider, Len Smith. The well-bred Nelson M’Alwyn was first selection l’or the Oreti Trot. Handicap, carrying two hundred chances more than Jock's Pal, with Day Pointer about forty followers off in third place. Revolt, Golden Dawn and Vasiliki also had many admirers. Nelson M’Alwyn led over the first five furlongs. Baker Boy was next in command, but Nelson M’Alwyn passed him. and was first into the straight, where he was tackled by Lady Zita, and Day Pointer, with Golden Dawn coming fast. A very exciting finish resulted in Nelson M’Alwyn winning by a neck from the fast-fin-ishing Golden Dawn, with Lady Zita a length away third, just in front of Day Pointer. Then came Vasiliki and Baker Boy. It was u very line race.

and* created great enthusludm. The winner is owned by Mr F. Wallis, jun. (Gore), who purchased him In Canterbury. Golden Dawn paced very fast over the last part. Lady Zita is a promising six-year-old mare by Harold

Rothschild—Wallace L mare. Times— . 3min 46 l-ssec, 3min 41 2-ssec. Smin 46 Backers declared strongly for Dancing Days in the Stewards’ Handicap. She carried nearly on hundred and seventy chances more than Corn Rigs, with Sweet Melody next in order, one hundred and twenty-five supporters off, but there was strong support for Jack o’ Lantern and Ecuador. At the start, Dancing Days, from number one berth, began smartly, -while Valdamo was slow on his legs, and Ecuador lost half a dozen lengths. Dancing Days led to the straight, with Sweet Melody next. In a fine finish Jack o’ Lantern got up to beat Dancing Days by a short neck, Ecuador three-quarters of a length off third, and Valdamo close up fourth, just in front of Sweet Melody and In The Pink. Ecuador did well to get a place, as he was a long way back two furlongs from home. The leading event of the day, the Soldiers’ Memorial Handicap, attracted a field of eight runners, with Baldowa heading the quotations by carrying four hundred and twenty chances more than Full Swing, who was eight supporters ahead •of Apache, with Warhaven only five followers off in fourth place, fifty chances in front of Dismantle. It was a great wagering race. From an excellent start Dismantle led Full Swing and All Style to the back, Geranial last. The field bunched at the far turn. Dismantle and Full Swing, on terms, led Warhaven, Apache and All Style, in a line, into the straight. Below the distance Full Swing headed the bunch, but Dismantle came again and in an interesting finish won by a length from Full Swing, Apache a head away, beating Warhaven by a head for third place, Baldowa close up fifth, then Geranial and All Style. Wagering on the Steeplechase Handicap was not heavy. Greenstone was first selection, carrying about two hundred chances more than Londonderry, with Nyanza over sixty supporters off third fancy, while Maungamoe commanded most attention of the others. Nyanza led Londonderry, Greenstone and Vice Grand over the first round. In the second lap the leaders were well clear of the field. Five furlongs from home Greenstone and Londonderry headed Nyanza and raced away for the last fence, head and head. The pair landed together, but Londonderry drew out below the distance. Greenstone came on again but appeared to take fright at the whip of Londonderry's jockey and swerved across the course. Londonderry went on to win by a length from Greenstone, with Nyanza twenty lengths off. Then came Kipling. At the double the first time Night ran off and Maungamoe and Vice Grand fell during the race. A good field of a dozen contested the Awarua Handicap, with Battle Colours elected to pride of place carrying over two hundred chances more than Tholompn, while Spearmaid was over three hundred and ten followers away in third berth. There was solid backing for Gipsy Maid, Soldier’s Hope, King Balboa and Ayrovski. At the start Gipsy Maid and Spearmaid got away smartly, while Battle Colours was one of the last to leave the post. As the field raced away from the far turn, led bv Gipsy Maid. Battle Colours came with a great run from the rear. Gipsy Maid led into the straight by a narrow margin from Battle Colours, Spearmaid, Tholomon and Soldier’s Hope. Inside the distance Spearmaid came with a vigorous run to beat Gipsy Maid by half a length, with Battle Colours a similar distance off third, a head in front of Soldier’s Hope. Then came King Balboa and Tholomon. Thre was keen investment on the Dash Trot Handicap, but Liberal always was first in demand, to carry about two hundred and seventy chances more than Sea Hawk, with Needles three hundred and fifty supporters away third fancy. At the start Pert Pointer and Fair Lad got off badly. Jumping out well Liberal led throughout to win pulling up by a dozen lengths from Sea Hawk, with Vasiliki six lengths away third. Then came South Star and Leith Chimes. The winner is a smart four-year-old gelding. prepared by A. M’Lellan at Invercargill. The runner-up is a son of the champion pacer Great Bingen from a Franz mare. Times—3 min Ssec, 3min 11 2-sseo, 3min 10 3-sscc. Receipt always was in favour for the

Farewell Handicap and eventually carried about one hundred and seventy chances more than Tholomon. with Queen Balboa two hundred and twentyfive supporters off in third place, while Bugle Note was one hundred and seventy admirers further away. The remaining starters were all keenly followed, with Kilbarry again the outsider of the field. From a perfect start Ardour led to the far turn from Receipt, Queen Balboa and Kilbarry. Across the top Receipt was in command, but Doleful Ditty joined her at the entrance to the straight. At the distance Doleful Ditty drew away to beat Receipt by a length, with Queen Balboa two lengths away third. Three lengths off All Style was fourth, followed by Bugle Note and Ardour. WEST COAST CARNIVAL. From Our Correspondent. HOKITIKA, November 18. Arrangements for the West Coast racing and trotting carnival at Christmas and New Year are now in full preparation. In all there will be twelve days’ sport.. The racing and trotting stakf j for the period aggregate £11,870. The Opening race meeting will be at Hoi ■ Ska on Boxing Day.
