The Town Planning Act comes into operation on January 1, and the new Department which it authorised is constituted under the direction of Mr R. B. Hammond. While the main requirements from local bodies in regard to the preparation of plans for their areas, and special grouped areas are set. out in the statute, the Department will go into the matter in greater detail in regulations which are being drafted and will come into operation in January, when the Town Planning Board will commence to function. Local authorities whose areas are covered by the provisions of the Town Planning Act have until January, 1930, to prepare their town plans, and they will get the helpful advice of Mr Hammond, who will probably have to include in his future dutieg a certain amount of education work among the general public as to the economic value of town planning.
