WOKE UP TO FIND BED IN FLAMES.
ONE-LEGGED MAN AT NORTH BRIGHTON WAS SEVERELY BURNED. J. Duke, who was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital yesterday morning suffering from severe burns, is still in a bad condition, though he is not on the seriously ill list. Awakening to find the bed on fire one o’clock yesterday morning. Duke, a one-legged man residing at North Brighton, had a narrow escape from death. By struggling, he managed to get outside the small cottage in which he lives and arouse his next door neighbour, Mr J. Wilkinson, who sent for a doctor. First aid was given Duke, who was burnt about the body, and he was taken to the Hospital by Constable Hisl'op. The fire was extinguished and the building, the property of Mr J. L. Scarveil, was saved. It is -believed that Duke was smoking in bed and fell asleep.
