WOMAN ALIGHTS FROM MOVING TRAM.

MOTOR-CAR HITS HER AND KILLS HER. (Special to the “ Star.") AUCKLAND, July 23. An accident, attended by fatal results, occurred about 7.30 o’clock this morning at the junction of Symonds Street and Wellesley Street East, tvhen a woman was knocked down by a motor-car and died almost immediately from injuries received. The driver, J. K. Hale, was proceeding up Wellesley Street with passengers he had met at the station. He was following the tramcar, keeping behind it on the hill. As the tram began to turn into Symonds Street deceased stepped off and the impetus carried her forward at a jog trot. The taxi-driver promptly applied his brakes and swerved to avoid the woman, but failed. The woman was thrown heavily and rolled in towards th'e gutter. The motor-car pulled up and the occupants rushed to assist the woman. It was seen that her injuries were very serious and she was hurriedly removed to the hospital, but she was dead upon admittance. The passengers in the motor-car state that the driver did all in his power to avert an accident, but the fact of the woman’s unexpected action in alighting from a moving tram negatived any chances. The car was proceeding at a moderate. pace and the brakes were applied with promptitude, but it is said the accident was inevitable.

Exhaustive inquiries failed to identify the woman. She had a purse, in her possession, but except for a large sum of money there were no papers that would lead to identification.

The police have supplied the following description of the woman:—About 35, dark, medium height, wore brown coat with fancy pattern worked on it. brown collar and cuffs, brown knitted costume, plain skirt, brown stockings, black shoes, and she carried a small basket containing blue overalls.
