NEW SCHEME IS TO OPERATE SOON.
BETTER TRAM SERVICES FOR SEVERAL LINES. From August 1 the services on some of the tram routes of the city will be markedly improved and on most of the others there will be alterations which should be appreciated by people who journey to business by tram. Three months ago the board adopted the report of a committee outlining the proposals, these being made possible by the construction of ten new cars. Five of the cars are ready to be commissioned. and the remainder will be completed at an early date. The task of working out the new time-tables is now being carried out by the traffic supervisor. The proposals submitted to the Tramway Board were as follow: Ilills-St Albans.—During the past year the board ran a six-minute service between St Albans Park and Tennyson Street, although the public is not getting the full benefit of this improvement because of the inadequate track facilities in Bealev Avenue, which the board is endeavouring to overcome. It is proposed to extend this frequent service to the foot of the hills (Barrington Street), and also to improve the service up the hill between 4 and 6 p.m. * Cranford Street. Woolston, Addington, Riccarton (Clyde Road) and Richmond. —Ten-minute services instead of the present fifteen-minute services, between 12 and S p.m. Dallington.—A twenty-minute service, instead of thirty. Spreydon.—Ten-minute service to Coronation Street, instead of .fifteen, a twentv-minute service to the terminus, replacing a thirty-minute serNorthcote Road.—-An increase in the number of trips to Northcote Road will also be made. In addition, m.ore trips will be made before 9 am. on nearly every line, which should be a convenience to workers. The improvements in the services have made necessary the construction of three extra loops—one in Stanmore Road, one. in Riccarton Road, both of which are completed, and one in Antigua Street, which' is almost ready. Additions will also have to be made to the board’s staff, ten extra men being required, and payment of these and power consumption will account for an extra £BOOO a year.
