WELLINGTON RACES WILL COMMENCE TO-MORROW.

FIELDS WILL BE LARGE IN ALL CLASSES OF RACES.

(Special to the “Star/’)

WELLINGTON, July 5. The weather prospects for the opening of the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting are very bright. A shower of rain fell at Trentham last night, and this was succeeded by a sharp frost, and the conditions overhead should be pleasant to-morrow. Underfoot conditions, however, are not so good. The course will not be quite so heavy as last year but will be quite bad enough. There is a record number of visiting horses on the ground, and the fields will be large in all classes of races. A lot of work was done this morning, though much was only of a useful nature.

Sturdee gave a finished exhibition by jumping four fences. He is improving steadily. Merry Singer went, with him, jumping well, and may race well.

The steeplechaser Omahu gave a good exhibition in schooling over fences, and then galloped well on the fiat. He will relish the heavy ground, lie was accompanied by Birkenose, a useful hack steeplechaser. Little River jumped two hurdles in a slovenly exhibition, but he rarely schools well.

Comical gave a brilliant display over three hurdles. He has come on a lot lately, and should be in great order for the Grand National Hurdle Handicap. Knighthood disgraced himself by refusing at one hurdle and then bucking over the next two. Zircon worked well on the fiat, and l'X>ks a good prospect for this week. Pascal made many friends in a six#ur!ongs gallop. He is a rare good sort and is likely to pay his way in open sprint company next season. All the South Island, horses got through useful tasks, but not many were sent at top.

Rivalry went freely in a six-furlong spin with Glenross. The Riccarton mare handled the ground well. Rapier was going in great style at ;the business end of six furlongs, after a slow start. He is at home in the mud.

Projector hit out well for a half-mile sprint, easily beating Bonatie, who could not handle the going. Bonomel and Sayonara did a useful sprint along the track. Both have done well since their arrival.

Charlatan is looking at his best. He did easy pacing. Blue Hall did useful work and looked in great fettle. North Inch and Prince Ferouz are both in capital fettle, but will be at a disadvantage, as they are novices at steeplechasing and hurdling respectively.

Carnot has developed a severe cold, and will not start at the meeting, which is bad luck for his connections.

Ecuador looks a picture, and should run prominently. A. E. Ellis will ride Fireblight in the Wellington Steeplechase, G. Holland. who was engaged, having had trouble with the authorities through leaving a former employer without notice.

Projector is very well, but is not a certain starter on the first day. He may be reserved for the shorter hack hurdle races later in the week. If he starts he will be ridden by E. Shaw, who will also pilot Charlatan, Blue Hall and Te Kawa to-morrow.
