The first social gathering of this season of the Southlantiers’ Society of Canterbury was held last night in the Scottish Society’s roorms, close upon one hundred being present. The president, Mr T. D. Lennie, said that the society was formed two years ago with the idea of keeping together the many former residents of Southland now living in Christchurch. The membership had increased in those two years—an indication of that 44 drift to the north ” of which much had been heard recentlv, and which affected Canterbury as well as Sotithland. It was proposed to hold three or four social gatherings during the present season; the next, to be held in about six weeks, would be a big Southland night, the annual reunion of the society. During the evening vocal and instrumental items were given by Miss Boyce, Messrs F. M’Natty, Colin Richards, D. Bishop, ar, d Arthur Woodward and party. Cards and dancing were also indulged in, and supper was provided.
