THE DON COSSACKS.

A MARVELLOUS CHOIR. The Don Cossack Choir appeared for the first time in England at the ASolian Hall and created an undisputed sensation. They number three dozen, and are conducted by Serge Jaroff. whose reputation is now world-wide. They sing everything by heart and. without any “giving of the note,” burst off suddenly into a fortissimo or steal in a pianissimo while the audience are still exchanging comments—and praises —of the song just finished. Their compass is from A below the bass to D, the fourth line of the treble clef. The volume of sound is like that of a large organ, and varies from the roar of tubas on heavy pressure wind, ing, to the whisper of a vox angelica

with the swell closed. All this which in a small hall sounds deafenunder perfect control as regards time and dynamics, and the pitch never rises or falls by a hair's breadth. It is a really wonderful instrument, and is played in a masterly manner. For one of the encores two exceedingly agile dancers come in and perform rather like the Gurkhas oii a resined floor. The Don Cossacks, come -to New Zealand under‘engagement of Mr E. J. Carroll, and will open' Christchurch season at the Theatre Royal on July 2.
