An amusing anecdote was narrated about surveying by Mr A. C. Cooke at the Gisborne Rotary Club lunch recently. It concerned an early survey task in the Port Awanui district. T»~e day had proved somewhat moist—within and without—and the instruction went forth for a “ flag ” to be placed on a far-away ridge. When the assistant reached the ridge and had cut a manuka pole, he found to his disgust that he had omitted to take a piece of calico with him. Hunting around he discovered the skeleton of a man and promptly hoisted the skull on top of the pole. The surveyor adjusted his telescope, walked round and round, had another look towards j the “ flag ” and then said “ Box up the j instruments. We won’t do any more j work to-day.” There is a unique and interesting exhibit in the Te Kuiti district court at the Auckland Winter Show. It consisted of a species of parasite which grows on New Zealand forest trees. When detached this looks like the root of a plant, being irregularly shaped and with many small shoots projecting from it. However, when the parasite is boiled a total transformation takes place, and what previously looked like a dirty root resembles delicate wood-carving. The treated article is called a. “ wood.fiower,’’ and some of the effects obtained by sirnply boiling the parasite are very beautiful. footballs reduced.
