Th® Harvest of Corks. London is the hub of the cork world and takes the greater part of the valexhale bark harvests of Spain and Portugal, the two countries whose soil and climate especially favour the growth of the cork-oak. No tree, for instance, is “ barked ” until it is at least 16in in circumference. On an average, it takes a tree twenty years to reach that size* Later “ barkings ” follow at intervals of from eight to ten 3-ears, and the quantity of the cork improves each time. A tree may 3-ield a serviceable bark until it is a hundred } r ears old. The first bark removed—virgin cork—is of too coarse a to be used for anything but tanning purposes. The second crop is better —good enough for stuffing lifebelts, and so on, where smoothness of texture and elasticity are not essential. For bottle corks the highest grade bark is used.
