A TRAIN OF THOUGHT.

To the Editor. Sir,—Allow me through the columns of y'our widely - ead paper to appeal for a rather large gap to be filled in the time-table of the Christchurch to Lyttelton service. The gap I refer to is between the 4.5 pJb. train and the 5.25. Sir. this gap at such a busy time wants filling just as badly as a hollow tooth, and is apparent to everybody* who has not a hollow head, as scores of workers who cease their daily toil at 4.30 and 4.45 will also tell you. Why, sir, at 44.40 quite a crowd is on the Christchurch station awaiting conveyance to port, and by r 5 p.m. an ordinary train would be packed with workers and others anxious for a warm fireside and a hot “ binder.” Sir. can you tell me of another place in New Zealand or in the world where workers leaving work at 4.30 to 4.45, or even 5 p.m., take from one hour to one hour and a half to get to their destinations seven miles away? I am not a very flash kind of person, and I know a lot of others like myself who would be content to travel in the new electric car if it left at 4.50 or 5 p.m., that, is. of course, if no ordinary' train was available, and the “ worker’s weekly* ” carried one on the lap of luxury. While in this “ train ” of thought, I Avould like to know why the 7.25 am. train never arrives in Christchurch to time, and is always from two to five minutes late. This will do for the present, but when T get into Parliament I will ask a lot more questions, and perhaps sack one or two officials just for spite, especially* the guard who collects tickets in the tunnel and fills the carriages with selfstarting cough mixture.—l am, etc., SQUARE WHEELS.
