HERE IS A NEW ONE FOR THE CHILDREN.
MANUFACTURERS WANT THEM TO COLLECT “ BOOST ” CARDS. (Special to the “ Star. ”) DUNEDIN, June 23. The cigarette card collection habit among children has provided the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association with an idea to “ boost” New Zealand goods. At a meeting of the association stickers for attachment to envelopes and posters, each with an outline of the Dominion and urging support of New Zealand-made products were brought forward for approval. Mr Shepherd: Stickers are a waste of money- What would be the use of sending stickers on envelopes to the clients? The envelopes must reach the home. Mr T. Somerville (chairman) said that Mr Reid, the secretary, bad suggested that the card system now adopted by cigarette manufacturers should be used by New Zealand producers. The cards could be enclosed in every packet sent out from the manufacturer’s factory, and a competition could be started among the children so that they would be induced to collect cards. Mr Wheeler: Them is no good our barking “ Buy New Zealand goods.” We should put a brand on, “ Made in New Zealand.” The manufacturers should show that they are proud of it. The chairman: A most important point. A national manufacturers’ brand, suCh as the kiwi, was suggested by Mr Shepherd as an alternative if opposition was raised to the stamping on of “ Made in New Zealand.” It was decided that Mr Wheeler and Mr Faulkner should draft a report on the matter. “ The only way is to have a New Zealand-Made Preference League, with the Governor-General or some personage at the head, as in Australia,” suggested Mr L. Johnson (Department of Industries and Commerce). Mr W. R. Hayward: The Government should be asked to compel all industries protected by duties to brand their goods “ New Zealand-Made. ” It was agreed that this suggestion should be forwarded with the coming | tariff proposals* I Mr W. Nees reported that the Propaganda in Schools Committee had gained the sympathy of the Head Masters' Association, and at a future conference both bodies would present proposals. “ The committee have done remarkabb* well,” remarked Mr Somerville.
