WOMAN ABUSES A SHOP ASSISTANT; CHARGE DISMISSED.

Smith, was preferred against her. “ I should think so, too. ” she said when the charge was dismissed. ft was yesterday aftefnOon that the commenced. Defendant went rnto -nc drapery shop owned by Frederick Smith in George Street, and made i- purchase. The assistant noticed the defendant pick up two singlets, and -.n formed the manager, who asked defendant to open her bag. This she did, according to the manager's story, and produced the goods. Defendant asked that the matter should be allowed to drop and probably nothing more would have been heard of the incident had not the defendant returned to the shop later in the afternoon and commenced to abuse the assistant. The police were called in, and the defendant was this morning asked to explain her conduct to Messrs D. M’Lennan and A. Lawrence Gee, J.P.’s. The facts as related were placed before the Bench, the police adding that the defendant was slightly under the influence of liquor at the time. The Bench said they had considered the evidence but were not satisfied that there was anything to show that the defendant intended to steal the goods. They pointed out that it was quite a common practice for people to pick up articles in one part of a shop and put them down in another. Further. defendant had not left the shop before being approached.
