DEFACING PUBLIC BEAUTY SPOTS.

AUCKLAND WILL NOT STAND HOARDINGS. HARBOUR BOARD DECLINES AN OFFER. (Special to the “Star.") AUCKLAND, June 23. Tn common with most local bodies which value the appearance of their areas, the Auckland Harbour Board has set itself against a display of glaring advertising matter on its wharves or buildings. An application was received by the board yesterday for the right to place what were described as attractive advertisements on the ceilings and partitions of the two ferry wharves on the city water front, the applicants stating that they understood that the board was averse to placing advertising matter on the exteriors of buildings. The board declined the request, and members made it clear that they were particular about the interior as well as the exterior walls of their property. The Whangarei Borough Council yesterday decided to convey to the Minister of Railways a protest against the intention of the advertising office to erect additional trellis signboards . on the Department’s property facing the Triangle, where a determined effort has been made to create a beauty spot around the site of the war memorial. The Glen Eden Town Board, at a meeting on Monday, refused to grant a permit for the erection of a hoarding advertising benzine. It stated that the policy of the board was against the disfigurement of the district by the erection of hoardings.
