FORMER MAYOR OF CH’CH DIES.

MR C. P. HULBERT PASSES AFTER 66 YEARS IN N.Z. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June 23. The death is announced of Mr C. P. Hulbert, aged eighty-four, formerly a well-known business man in Christchurch, where he was twice Mayor. He was born in Bristol, and arrived in New Zealand from Australia in 1860. lie took part in the rush at Gabriel’s Gully and the Dunstan in Otago, and later served in the Maori wars. He was a prominent Mason. lie had five sons serving in the war, the youngest of whom, Captain L. V. Hulbert, was killed in the battle of the Somme in 1916. He leaves a widow and a family of eight. He will b.. buried in Christchurch tomorrow. Civic Career. Mr Hulbert was Mayor of Christchurch for the years 1884 and 1885, and was a conspicuous figure in business and social circles in the city for many years. He was first elected to the City Council in 1879 to represent the. south-east ward, and was again elected for the same ward in 1881 and 1886. 116 came to New Zealand from Australia, and after taking part in the “ rush ” to the Otago goldfields, he went through the Maori war, for which he received the New Zealand war medal. Subsequently he established a business in High Street, as mercer, hatter and tailor, the business still being carried on under his name. After disposing of his business he went to Wellington to reside, but more recently he lived in Christchurch for a few years, with his son. Lieutenant Colonel E. J. Hulbert. who was for some time officer in charge of the Treasury Department in Christchurch. When Colonel Hulbert was transferred back to Wellington last year his father accompanied him. Mr Hulbert was present at the official opening of the new municipal buildings on September 1, 1924, and in the Course of a speech mentioned that lie had'also been present ip 1886 at the opening of the old buildings at the corner of Worcester Street and Oxford Terrace. The. flag at the municipal buildings was flown at half-mast to-day as a mark of respect to Mr Hulbert.
