NOTES ON THE PLAY.

The defeat of Vincent Richards, the foremost American player, is the sensation of the hour, and it will lend added interest to the French invasion, seeing that Cochet beat him ersily enough after the loss of the first set. Tlie other prominent F/enchman who is mentioned on the winning side is Brugnon. but Gobert, now a light of other davs is eliminated. Kinsey, who is by no means a formidable American, has beaten Gilbert, one of the English Davis Cup team, in hollow fashion, but Turnbull, Britain’s first player, is st»ill alive, and so is Austin, the young marvel, who has worn down Eames. Lycett is still going strong. In tlie women's singles Suzanne Lenglen has beaten Miss Mary Browne, of America, a very hard fighter, who is the best of the American ladies. With this match, a great deal of interest goes out of the contest, but it looks, as if the champion mav have a good match with Miss Ryan. ' Misses Joan Fry and Betty Nuthall, promising young English players, are still in.
