HOSPITAL BOARD.

The North Canterbury Hospital Board met to-day; present. Mr H. J. Otley (chairman), Airs E. R. Al’Combs, Airs IT. F. Herbert, Revs. J. K. Archer, Clyde Carr, F. Rule, ATessrs P. Al. Acton Adams, G. Armstrong, L. B. Evans, IT. H. Holland, F. Howell, W. E. Leadley, R. M’Millan, F. G. Norton, F. Rowell, A. T. Smith, W. P. Spencer, and W. J. Walter. The public health’ committee reported that as there was little interest in the vocational class in fruit farming at the Upper Sanatorium it was proposed to discontinue this. With reference to the footpath from Rossmore Terrace to the Sanatorium Hill, the public health committee suggested that provided the Heathoote County Council would construct a proper footpath with a wooden kerb and three feet of asphalting, the board would contribute £75 towards the cost. The hospital committee reported that a proposal had been received that the hospitals in the four chief cities be recognised as medical school hospitals, each to take a proportion of students in their last year of training. The committee recommended the board to accept the proposal, and reported that as there was no accommodation in the board’s premises it would be necessary for them to find their own board and residence outside the hospital. The report of the radium department stated that 33 new patients had been accepted for treatment, of whom 27 were suffering from malignant disease. Fiftyeight radium applications had been given and 110 deep therapy applications. The total attendance during the month was 377. Three patients had been discharged. Notice was received that a magistrate had made an order for the committal of a - woman from Ashburton to the Jubilee Home. Alembers considered that the principle of receiving patients from outside the hospital district was a bad one, and the opinion was expressed that steps should be taken to secure an amendment of the regulations governing these cases. It was reported that there was no room in the home for infirmary cases and it was decided to recommend that steps should be taken to have the patients admitted to the Ashburton Hospital.
