POWERS OF BISHOPS MAY BE INCREASED.

FAR-REACHING PROPOSALS UNDER CONSIDERATION IN ANGLICAN CHURCH By Telegraph.; —Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, June 22. Far-reaching proposals to endow the bishops of the Church of England with unfettered power to declare judgment on matters of doctrine and discipline are -embodied in the report of the Ecclesiastical Courts Commission which is being presented to the Church Assembly on July 6. It is proposed that the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council should be abolished ; ‘secondly, that various acts of Parliament, regarding Church discipline should be repealed; thirdly, that offending clergy should be liable to deprivation or excommunication by the Bishops' Courts. The Bishop of Durham, one of the signatories, makes a reservation so far as to express the opinion that a final court on doctrine is incompatible with Royal supremacy.
