Miss Ruby Wilding was a passenger from Dunedin last evening. Miss M. Han ham, Dunedin, is at present staying in Christchurch. Mrs Marmaduke Bethel l, Pahau Pastures, Culverden, is spending a few days •in < ’hristchurch.

Mrs J. Meadoweroft, St Andrew’s quare, is visiting Dr and Mrs J. Crawtaw, Seaclift, Dunedin.

Mrs D. W. Reese, St Andrew’s Square, will leave Christchurch to-day for Hokitika.

Mrs Edgar Reay, Durham Street, is visiting her mother, Mrs W. Burt, Dunedin.

Guests at the Hotel Federal include the following: Mr G. Patterson, Mrs and Miss Crawford, Timaru; Misses Cameron (2), Ashburton; Mr F. Haig, Dunedin. An enjoyable evening was spent orr Friday at the residence of Mr and Mrs G. Popplewell. Rotherham. Music and songs occupied the greater part of the evening, and games and dancing were enjoyed till an early hour. Mr and Mrs R. Aspinall (Dunedin), Mrs J. M’Kenzie (Timaru), Mrs Pulley and Miss E. Greere (Hamner Springs), Mrs R. L. Amos (England), Miss I. MacLachlan (London), and Miss M. L. MacLachlan (Dipton) are guests at the Clarendon Hotel. It was reported at last night’s meeting of the t'itv Council that Miss C. E. Henderson, of Governor's Bay, had been appointed demonstrator and saleswoman at the Municipal Electricity Department’s showroom. Eleven applications were received for the position. Jn the Concert Hall at Mount Magdala on Sunday afternoon, an appreciative audience enjoyed an excellent programme of musical and vocal items given by Misses Gladys Vincent. Renetta Rings, Hilda Crozier, Mr and Mrs J. Gillespie and Mr S. Crozier. Miss Eileen Goddard, who is shortly to be married, was the guest of honour at a China afternoon given recently by Mrs C. Xeave and Miss Doris Trist at the former's residence, St Martins. Among those present were:— Mesdames C. Neave, J. Goddard, J. Xeave, S. Spedding, W. Trist, H. Wilson, J. Kerr. Misses Eileen Goddard, Doris Trist, Millie Kerr. Daisy Hawkins, Ruby and Thelma Xeave. An enjoyable evening was spent in the W.E.A. rooms on Saturday, when Mrs Davies presented the following programme:—Songs. Mrs Davies and Miss Lomas; pianoforte solo, Miss Boot; recitation, Miss Musgrove; song, Mr Worgan; instrumental item, Messrs Stokes and Ludbrook; pianoforte duet. Miss M'Cleary and Mrs Ford. Mrs Ford was the accompanist. Mr Bullen, on behalf of the audience, thanked the artists for their contributions to the evening’s enjoyment. The Social Committee dispensed supper. The dance held in Jellicoe Hall on Saturday evening, under the auspices of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, was again well attended. The arrangements were excellent, and the music of Willyams’s Grand Band was favourably commented on. The hall was prettily decorated, and during the

evening streamers were effectively used. The arrangements for next Saturday's dance are in the hands of the following committee:—Messrs Fleck, Lloyd, Hayden, Dabourn, Smith, Hoffman and Thomas.

Miss Joyce Brugh, of Dunedin, is the guest of Mrs E. Woolf, Stratford Street. Mr and Xlrs Howard Seldon will ar rive in Christchurch from Ashburton to-day.

Dr and Mrs Thompson, who were in ('hristchurch on a brief visit, returned to Amberley today.

Mrs W. F. Hamilton,'Ash wick Station, Fairlie, has returned to the south from a short visit to Christchurch.

Mrs Maurice O’Rorke, who is visiting Christchurch, is staying with her aunt, Mrs J. S. Thomson, Merivalc. Mr and Mrs R. L. Jamieson of Rotherham. will arrive in Christchurch today and will stay at the Clarendon Hotel.

Mr IT. Chapman., District Traffic Manager, N.Z.R., Christchurch, and Mrs Chapman returned on Friday, after spending a holiday in the North Island.

On Saturday evening Miss Muriel M’Donald, Jackson’s Road, entertained a number of her friends at a dance. Among those present were: Mr and Mrs L. Puddv, Mr and Mrs 11. M'Donald, Mr and Mrs L. Sisson, Mr and Mrs V. Massey, Mrs V. M'Donald, Misses L. Legg, E. Cossins, E. and A. BeecrOft, C. M’Donald, L. Steere, M. Lavery and Bennell, Messrs R. Sweeney, E. Lavery, R. Woollerton, J. Nimmo, T. Woollerton, C. Beecroft and C-. Lavery. Items were given by Mrs Puddv, Mrs V. M’Donald, Miss Bennell and Messrs J. Nimmo and C. Lavery.

A delightful evening was spent at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. Lyon, Linwood, when they entertained a number of friends. The evening was spent in games and dancing. The hostess wore an attractive dress of mole crepe de chine. Among those present were: - —Misses A. Lyon, mauve silk marocain; O. Taylor, white crepe de chine and radium lace; E. Mapplebeck, kingfisher blue satin; D. Mapplebeck, pink silk marocain and silver ribbon; D. Ellis, pink silk marocain with net overdress; J. Walker, white velvet; M. Wilson, a black frock; Messrs R. Taylor, G. Browne, R. Wilson, J. Wilton, A. Wilson, J. Jackson and O. E3'les. An enjoyable afternoon was spent at the Cashmere Tennis Courts yesterday, when a tennis tournament was played between the home team and Avonside A, which resulted in a win for Avonside 117 against Cashmere 74. Many exciting games were played, and the beautiful sunshine added considerably to the pleasure, of the players. Afternoon tea was served by the Cashmere ladies. The players were: Mrs J. C. Lord (guest) and Mrs H. C. D. van Asch, Mrs Warren Fisher, Mrs Mackie, Mrs Charters, Mrs Greenwood, Mrs L. Dougall. Miss Edith Bowron, Miss May Spiers. Miss Amy Campbell, Miss Dorman, Miss May Allard, Miss Muirson, Mrs Bullock, Mrs Angus Donaldson and Mrs Price.
