IS WATER SUPPLY BEING WASTED. QUERIES COUNCIL.

At last night's meeting of the CityCouncil, Councillor E. H. Andrews asked jhe chairman of the Water SupplyCommittee (Councillor A. W. Beaven) if the committee would take steps to abate the wretched system of refusing applications for water connections from people in .various parts of the city\ He alsd criticised the system, for which the present committee was not responsible. of having allowed water pipes to be put in by private people. Councillor Beaven said that the question was difficult to answer as the efforts of the present committee were bound to a large extent by what previous committees had done. The committee had passed a resolution that no further connections be made outside the reticulated areas, and it was endeavouring to carry r that out. While the committee was most anxious to supply everybody with water, it would be bad business to cut down the people at present supplied in favour of those who would like to be supplied. Councillor Andrews: Cut out the waste. Councillor Beaven replied that that was exactly what the committee wanted to do. It wished to appoint two inspectors who would go round the city and detect where waste of water was taking place.
