STOLE RUGS FROM MOTORS ON STREETS
“He cannot help stealing. He was here on June 3, and got fourteen days for stealing a plane. As soon as he came out, he started thieving again. He has been before the Court before, and he has had reformative treatment on two occasions,” said Chief Detective Gibson at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when Alfred Howard, a butcher, aged thirty-three years, was charged with stealing eight rugs, valued at £l9 os, between May 20 and June 21. He pleaded guilty. The Magistrate (Mr H. A. Young, S.M.): Did he steal these from motorcars? Mr Gibson: They were all stolen out of cars on the street. People are very foolish in leaving them on the stands, but they will do it. He sold the around the town under various names. The Magistrate: Do you wish to say anything? Accused: No, sir. The Magistrate; In this case accused, in twelve years, has been ten times convicted of theft. Fie has been given reformative treatment and imprisonment. On one charge he will be sentenced to six months’ imprisonment with hard labour, to be followed by a year and a half's reformative detention. On the other charges he will be convicted and discharged.
