"GIANT” MADE MISTAKE, SAYS TOWN CLERK; LETTER GIVES HEIGHT 6FT 11¾IN.
Did Mr W. B. Jeffrey, 110, Torrens Road. Ilillmorten, really think that he was just under 7ft in height when he applied for a position as motor inspector last month? He said he was, anyhow. Reading the “Star” last night, Mr J. S. Neville, the Town Clerk, saw the denial of the “giant” that he had declared his height to be 6ft 11 Sin; and to-day to reassure himself he turned up the letter in his files. There it was: “I am 6ft ll?in in height.” He showed the a “Star” reporter, and there -was not the slightest doubt that it was 6ft and not sft: neither was there any doubt that the date on top of the letter was May 29 and not May 23, the day on which Mr Jeffrey said that he posted the letter. And stamped at the head by the Town Clerk’s own stamp was: Received, June 1 : answered, June 2. “Mr Jeffrey has made a mistake in his dates,” Mr Neville said. He might have added “and in his height too.”
