ALTERATION OF STREET NAMES.

COUNCIL PROPOSES NUMEROUS CHANGES. The City Counci! at its meeting last night confirmed a resolution making a special order altering the names of certain streets in the city. Objections had been received to eight of the proposed alterations. The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) explained that the legal position with reto these objections was that the special order must be adopted as originally passed or the proposed alteration of the name of any street must be struck out. This meant that no suggested new names could be substituted that evening. It was accordingly decided to refer back to the By-Laws Committee the names to which exception had been taken and the resolution altering the names of the other streets was confirmed. Following are the alterations objected to with particulars of the objections : Albert Street to Dobson Street.—A petition signed by fourteen residents stongly objecting to the change of name has been received. Alexandra Street to Ashh— Street.— Mr F. D. Jones objected and pointed out that it was altered from Victoria Street. He would not object to Mary Street and suggested that Alexandra Street remain and Vogel Street be renamed Alexandra Street. The Richmond Burgesses* Association suggested that Alexandra Street should be renamed Vogel Street from Fitzgerald Avenue to Forth Street, including the part of Tweed Street adjoining Vogel Street. Church Lane to Cheshire Lane.—The Rev O. Fitz Gerald objected and pointed out that it was appropriately named, as it. led to the Avonside Church; also stating that the whole congregation strongly objected to the entrance to their church being named Cheshire Lane. 4 Dyer's Road to Barker Street.—Mr E. S. Parish objected to the alteration of the name to Barker Street and suggested Parish Street. He gave reasons for the suggested alteration, some of which were as follow:—His grandfather, William Parish, who arrived by the ship Cressy in 1850, was a contractor. and formed Ferry Road, and many roads and streets in and around the city. He was a member of the first Heathcote Road Board. Parish Street, Linwood, was named after him, but was altered first to Cambridge Street and later to Bordesley Street. Langdon’s Road to Lambeth Street— The Papanui Progress League protested against any alteration of the name and stated that residents in the district felt it to be a slight on the. family who had resided for many years in the district. North Avon Road (from London Street), to Fitzgerald Avenue.—The Richmond Burgesses’ Association suggested that one name be given to North Avon Road from London Street to Stanmore Road, including Fowke Street. The association suggested that Draper Street and Swann’s Road be ore name from Hey wood Terrace to Swann's Bridge. St Andrew’s Terrace to Walnut Avenue.—A petition signed by ten ratepayers objecting to the name of Walnut Avenue and suggesting Raneleigh Terrace, and a petition signed by eleven residents and property holders protesting against the name of Walnut Avenue and suggesting Mountview Ter race, had been received.

St John’s Street to Blair Street.—A petition signed by fifteen persons suggesting St John’s Avenue had been received.
