For some time past workmen have been employed on a trench dug in the footpath in Armagh Street outside the Municipal Electricity Department’s premises. No doubt it has been the subject of comment from passers-by, who wished to know why “they were digging the roads up again.” Some information on the subject was given at last night's meeting of the City Council by the Electricity Committee, which reported as follows: ’’The work now in progress in Armagh Street results from the fact that this footpath has reached its full capacitv in cables in one layer. T 0 p rov j c j e f or future growth, it is now necessary to arrange for rabies to be carried in a number of layers as their number increases. The requirements for such a purpose cannot be met a? the need arises. It is therefore necessary +o provide for 3 number of ahead in such a wa>; jhat new cables can be drawn in without opening up the toot path This work was authorised by the council at its meeting on November 23 last- and is now in progress. Owing to the presence of cables, most of which carrying load continu ouslv, the work can be done on!.- in sections, and one half of the footpath, opened at a time.
