WAIMAIRI COUNTY.

The Wa.ima.iri County Council met yesterday afternoon, Mr H. Paterson presiding. There were also present Messrs R. W. Hawke. XV. .1. Walter, Or. Shipley, I'T. Kit.son. \v.. Spencer, n k Cross, .T. Cleland, T. Newnham, Cx. T. Mulcock, G. S. Cowper and F. Voice. The Works Committee’s report, which contained the recommendation that the council should procure another truck and that arrangements for financing Its coat be made through the Highways Board, was adopted. The lighting Committee’s report was adopted with the exception of clause five, which, recommended that the council should enter into a new contract, with the City Council for a supply of electrical current for five years at £8 per k.w., from the termination of the existing contract. Tt was resolved that tills clause be held over for discussion at the next meeting of the council. It was decided that the council make application for an overdraft of £IO,OOO for the current financial year. After some discussion a motion that tenders be called for a contract for the removing of rubbish from residences m Papanui, Fendalton, Belfast and Middleton, was lost the chairman giving his casting vote against the motion. The Electrical Engineer’s report, which stated that, the new sub-station at the corner of Garden Road and Wairarapa Terrace would be put Into service during the week, was adopted. On the motion of Mr Newnham it was decided that £lO be donated to the Riecarton Library fund. This amount was increased to £3 5 at a later stage of the meeting. The question of the revision of charges for eleotric heating was brought up for discussion and it was resolved that a special committee be appointed to consider t.he matter and submit, a report of its deliberations to a future meeting of the council. A letter was received from residents of Langdon’s Road asking that the council protest against the proposal, made by the City Council, that the name of this road be changed to Lambeth Road. The letter stated that this road perpetuated the good name of a very old identity in the district and that there was little chance of conflict between it and Langdown’s Road, Opawa. Mr Hawke moved that the council bring the matter under the notice of the City Council. Langdon’s Road, he pointed out, was not wholly within the city boundary, about half of it extendinto TVaima.iri County. The council, therefore, had a say in the naming of the road. The motion was carried.
