PROFESSOR STEWART GAINS HIGH HONOUR.

TO TAKE CHAIR OF LATIN AT LEEDS UNIVERSITY.

Professor H. Stewart,. C.M.G., D. 5.0., M.C., M.A., of Canterbury College, has been appointed to the chair of Latin in the University of Leeds, England, lie will assume his new duties in Oc-

tober. In this position Professor Stewart succeeds Professor B. M. Connal, M. a distinguished early graduate of Canterbury College. Professor Stewart was educated at Fettes. Edinburgh University, and Trinity College, Cambridge. Before coming to New Zealand in 1013 when he joined the professorial staff of Canterbury College, he was a master at Rugby, and lecturer in the University of Liverpool. His war service with the New Zealand forces was a very creditable one indeed. He left with the main body as a lieutenant and served throughout the Gallipoli campaign. He commanded one of the evacuation parties. On the formation of the Second Infantry Brigade, New Zealand Division, in 191 G. he was appointed to the command of the second battalion, Canterbury Regiment. He held this appointment till the Armistice, and thereafter he was Director of Education in the N. Since his return to New Zealand Professor Stewart has been honorary A.D.C. to his Excellency the GovernorGeneral, president of the New Zealand R.S.A., and at the present time he commands the South Island Infantry Brigade. _
