-1 1 L' RGESSES’ ASSOC I AT I OX. The monthjy meeting of the Burgesses’ Association was held last Tuesday. Mr A. C Wilson presiding over a la gc attendance of. members. I hc secretary read the names of ten new members who had joined the association since last meeting. In connection with the repairs to the St Albans Park rotunda, the City Council replied stating that trie matter was being attended to by the Works Committee. It was decided to write to the council asking that the by-law in connection with the taking away of wooden bridges oyer culverts be enforced. Complaints were received in connection with overhanging hedges in Trafalgar and St Albans Streets. The matter was referred to the council. The chairman reported on the concert to be held in St Matthew’s Schoolroom shortly. Messrs Peat. Falkinder, Grover, Penfold and Dailey, with the chairman and secretary, were appointed a committee to arrange the concert. Mr G. T. Grover gave a comprehensive practical talk on wool as it affected the grower and the consumer. The address was much appreciated, a hearty vote of thanks being accorded Mr Grover at its conclusion. ' FOOTBALL CLUB. After a series of reverses, the senior team last Saturday defeated Villa by two goals- to nil, C. Goode and C. A. Hall being the scorers. Those who played well were C. Goode. D. Williamson, L. Bunt and A. R. Cullen. The team has so far this season been battling along with a very weak team, only two of last year’s team playing regularly. They have since been strengthened tv the inclusion of D. Williamson, C. Watson and A. Bryan, and on Saturday these players proved their worth. The third grade team played Sumner, and won handsomely by five goals to two. Goals were scored by G. Cullen <4» and X. Donovan. This team has had so far a good innings, having won ail their games but one. and that against Technical, which match was drawn. This team is at the top of the table, leading'by one point. ST ALBANS EUCIIRE ASSEMBLY. The weekly series was held last Tuesday a good attendance assembling in the Wfnton Street Hall. The following were the prize-winners:—Mrs Brvdon, Mrs Moir. Mrs Stansell. Mrs Jones, Mrs Buist and Mrs Tindall, Messrs Downing. Herriott. C. Wilson, Dollan, Parsdnage and Smithers. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs C. Rowntree, of M'Fadden's.Road, left last Wednesday for a

two weeks’ holiday visit to Napier. Mrs Prouting, of Springfield Road, accompanied by her two boys, is spending a week’s holiday in Geraldine. Miss Rosewarne, of Warrington Street, who has been spending a six weeks’ holiday in Auckland, returned home on Tuesday. SHIRLEY SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the committee was held last Tuesday; present —Mr C. S. Thompson (chairman), Mrs M'Kay (secretary), Messrs Burson, Clothier. Stanley. Finney, Anderson, Salt and Hunt. The head master’s report stated that the average attendance for the month was 583. Considering the amount of illness at this time of the vear, the health of the children was very good. The Works Committee reported that the east side of the school had been ploughed, levelled and sown down in grass. Messrs Anderson and Clothier were appointed the Works Committee for the month. LOYAL BENEVOLENT LODGE, M.U.J.0.0.F. The Loyal Benevolent Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., held its half-yearly meeting on Monday night, N.G. Brother S. Geary presiding over the largest attendance of members that has attended the lodge since the wan A vote of condolence was passed to the relatives of the late P.G.M. Brother J. Marshall, of the Loval Rangiora Lodge. It was decided to purchase a full set of new regalia for the lodge officers and supporters. At this stage brethren of the Loyal City of Norwich Lodge, Lyttelton district, entered the room, and received a very hearty welcome. P.P.G.M. Brother W. Foster thanked the lodge for its hearty welcome. The lodge unanimously endorsed the recommendations of the Building and Finance Committee. P.G.’s Brothers W. 11. Phillips and W. B. Browne gave a lengthy report on the business transacted at the last meeting of the U.F.S. Dispensary Board. The lodge unanimously approved of the recommendations from the board dealing with the increased levy and increase of secretary’s salarj*. The following motion was carried unanimously: “That this lodge pass a vote of confidence in the U.F.S. Dispensary’s Board of Management for the very able way that they had carried out the business in connection with the hospital bed scheme.” The following is the list of officers for the ensuing six months:—l.P.N.G., Brother S. A number of toasts were honoured, and the following contributed items to the programme:—Brothers F. Cole, G. T. Grover, G. T. Hillsdon, S. Geary, 11. Osborne and I. Scott. ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION. Large congregations assembled at the Rugby Street Church on Sunday, when the officiating ministers were the Rev Norman Webster, 8.A., and the Rev Leslie B. Neale. As usual, an attractive feature was the fine musical service rendered by a large choir under the conductorship of Mr W. Simpson. On Tuesday one of the most successful ceremonies took place, at which there was an attendance of about 150. Mr W Simpson, who presided, apologised for the absence of the Rev Leslie B. Neale, who was suddenly taken ill that morning. Mr F. M. Brown reported that the church property was valued at £13,000,

with a liability of £IOOO. All the activities of the church were reported on by the officials. An amount of £llOO had been raised during the year. The choir rendered several musical items, and the ladies of the congregation supplied refreshments. BARROW FAIR. On Saturday evening, at the Rugby Street Schoolroom, a good number were interested in a fair. A varied assortment of goods was soon disposed of, the vendors making capital saleswomen. The arrangements were in the hands of Misses Miles. Stevens and Thompson and Messrs L. T. Jones and C. Boyer. CHRISTCHURCH NORTH. A pleasant function took place at the Rendezvous Cafe on Wednesday* when Mr and Mrs 11. Holland entertained at afternoon tea over forty electors who had, as members of his election committee, worked to secure his return as member for Christchurch North. A cordial welcome was extended to those present, and Mr Holland received congratulations.
