ANTI-BRITISH FILMS ARE TO BE BARRED.
CENSORSHIP IN AUSTRALIA IS TO BE TIGHTENED UP. By Telegraph. —Press Assn.— Copyright. Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received June 3, 10.35 a.m.) MELBOURNE. June 3. Speaking at Moonec Ponds, Dr S. S. Argyle (Chief Secretary and Minister of Public Health for Victoria) complained bitterly that some films shown in the picture theatres were being used for propaganda inimical to the welfare of the British Empire. He intimated that it was the intention of the Government to introduce next session a Bill to provide for the censorship of all films. The Bill would also contain a clause compelling every picture show to screen at least a thousand feet of British film. Under the present system the Commonwealth censor controls only imported films. The object of the Bill is to give him full powers over all prdfc ductions. The censor would also be empowered to order that children must not be admitted to see certain pictures, considered unsuitable for them.
