Hopes excited by yesterday’s glorious weather were disappointed in the morning after a night-long downpour. The spirit of gaiety and merriment usually associated with the pilgrimage to Epsom was largely absent during the morning. Venturesome enthusiasts who, despite the rain, started early in open carts and vehicles insufficiently covered to keep out the downpour, found difficulty in being happy and jolly. Thousands who intended to see the Derby abandoned the project. It was noticeable that London traffic centres, usually congested on a fine Derby day morning, were comparatively clear to-day. '
