WINS £22,000 IN CALCUTTA SWEEP.
LUCKY MAN WORKS QUIETLY THROUGH RACE. A us. and N.Z. Cable Association. Ev Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received June 3. 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 2. The Calcutta Sweep winner, Mr Bishop, acted on the principle that a few thousands in hand were better than a problematical £120.000. First he, sold a half-share for £7OOO, and then parcelled out the other three-eighths, retaining only one-eighth, which was worth £lo.ooo. It is estimated that he will win £25.000. It is interesting to note that a purchaser of a half-share receives £60,000. Bishop sat in his office and worked throughout the race. When a friend telephoned he said quietly: “Thanks Discussing the sale, Bishop said: “If I had had a little more courage, I should have won a great deal more.” He announced his intention to continue work, although his employer stated that he had been granted indefinite leave, and had rather spoilt his chance of a yearly rise.
