FATAL ENDING TO SEARCH FOR ESCAPED HOSPITAL PATIENT.
(Special to the "Star.”) HOKITIKA, June 2. Through falling from a lorry on the Blue Spur Road this morning, Robert Brown, a single man, an attendant at the Mental Hospital, sustained a" fractured skull, and died shortly after. Brown had been out all night, watching for an escapee from the institution, and with other attendants was returning on the lorry. Going round a turn in the road the lorry bumped into a rut. Brown was thrown out, and struck the embankment, and fell into the water table. The lorry was stopped and Brown’s three companions hastened back to find their comrade unconscious. While being brought in to the institution he regained consciosness. and on arrival was attended by Dr Buchanan, the superintendent. A second doctor was sent for with the intention of operating, but Brown lapsed into unconsciousness and expired shortly after. An inquest is to be held to morrow.
