STOCK PRICES.

SUMMARY OF YESTERDAY’S SALE. The entry of fat cattle at the weekly stock sale at Addington yesterday totalled 485 head, compared with 620 • last week. On the whole the quality was.not too good. There were seyeral. nicely finished lines of steers penned, including a couple from the North Island, but generally the quality was plain. Cows again formed a large proportion of the entry, in spite of the fact that many of the more inferior cows were sent to the store pens by the grader. The sale was not a very bright one, this no doubt being due to the fact that most butchers are carrying fairly large supplies of beef. Good cow and heifer beef sold at about late rates, but steer beef was a shade weaker. The demand became very ; slack towards the end of the market and sales in the final stages were very difficult to make. Prices a 1001 b were:—Best Canterbury steer beef 37s to 40s, North Island prime 35s to 375. medium quality steer 34s to 36s Od, fair to good heifer. 20s to 325, inferior cow 24s to 28s, and rough down to 18s. The entry of fat sheep filled ten races, two less than last week. The quality was only mediocre, the proportion of light ewes being somewhat heavier than has been the case at recent sales. The market was not so bright as last week. The freezing buyers did not purchase so freely, this no doubt being due to the fact that the holiday to-morrow will interfere with the killing at the works this week. Prices for all classes were irregular, but light ewes were cheaper than last week by Is to Is Gd a head. Wethers and heavier ewes -were only a shade cheaper. The yarding of fat lambs was a small one, totalling 1600 head. The demand was again good, for freezing sorts, w'hich made full schedule rates, but a' good many inferior lambs were penned. These did not sell very well and they would- have been better suited to the store-pens. For the time of the year the entry of store sheep was fairly large, the numbers being swelled by lines from the Gisborne and Masterton districts. The demand for store lambs, ewes and wethers was dull, but, in a measure, this was due to the fact that the quality of most of the sheep penned was not attractive to buyers. Cows formed the bulk of the store cattle penning. Forward cows -were sought after and sold well. A small yarding of 44 head of dairy cattle met with a keen demand and prices were considerably better than those ruling last week. Vealers fit for butchers’ purposes sold well at late rates, but a good many of the calves were of indifferent quality and these proved slow of sale. They were not wanted by the butchers. Fat pigs met with a - fair sale throughout. In the store pig department weaners i and slips made better prices than at the previous

sale, -but medium and- laFge stores- were no better. - , \rn~; Following are ranges of values:—* ... FAT CATTLE. Extra heavy steers to £lB 12s fid. Prime heavy steers, £ls*losto £17.155.
