MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr 11. Y. Widclowson, 3.M.) VAGRANCY CHARGE. Alexander M'Laughlan pleaded guilty to a charge of vagrancy, Chief-Detective Gibson ..skecl for a remand, as ;here were other charges pending. The case was remanded for a week, bail being allowed. NO HOLIDAY. P. Sim was proceeded against by the Labour Department (Mr Kennedy) on the grounds that he employed two assistants after 1 p.m. on every day of the week. Sim pleaded guilty. Mr Kennedy said that defendant was a fishmonger. For eight or nine months his assistants had not had a half-holiday in any week. The Magistrate imposed a fine of 40s and costs. PASSED OYER CROSSING. Francis William James Belton pleaded guilty to a charge of having driven over the Colombo Street railway crossing while the line was not clear. Mr Brown, for the Railwdy Department, said that there were three keepers on duty at the time, and the car came up while a train was shunting on the crossing. The bell was ringing. When interviewed, defendant had stated that when on It he crossing he had accelerated to get out of the way of the engine. lie was on the line on which the train was, and had he attempted to reverse his engine might have stalled. Defendant was fined 20s and costs..
