A statement issued by the Trades Hall Disputes Committee says that there are good hopes that the forty-four hours’ dispute •will be settled. The men have agreed to hold a conference with the employers on Monday, at which it is expected a settlement will be. arrived at on the terms of a forty-four-hour week for forty-four hours’ pay. A conference between the miners and the Engine-drivers' and Firemen’s Union held in an endeavour to find a basis for the settlement of the. miners’ strike ended abruptly, the two orga nisations being unable to arrive at. an xmderstanding. and, unless unforeseen developments occur, the whole indus try in Australia is threatened with a hold-up. The engine-drivers state that they object strongly to -he miners at tempting to negotiate for an early settlement of the strike and that the min ers have made the engine-drivers a catspaw.
