The death is announced of Mr William Pollard, aged 75, a, well-known pastoralist of Marlborough. He was president of the Marlborough Patriotic Society and vice-president of the Marlborough Racing Club. Some years ago he gave Waterlea Park to the Blenheim borough. The monthly meeting of the British Sailors Society was held in the St John’s Ambulance Society rooms yesterday, Mrs Thacker presiding over a good attendance. Votes of thanks wore passed to Mcsdanjcs Hamilton and J. G. L. Vernon for arranging a tennis tournament held at the Wesley Courts, Brown’s Road on Thursday last in aid of the Empire Memorial Hostel, London. In spite of the wet afternoon a large number of players and friends were present and £ll 6s was raised. Mfs Acland and Mrs Webb arranged a vey successful concert at the Seamen’s Institute, Lyttelton, last Thursday evening which was largely attended, over 100 seamen being present. Leave of absence was granted to Mrs J. 11. Hall, who is leaving for a trip to England. In response to an appeal for funds for the Empire Memorial Hostel, £ls is to be sent from the Christchurch Branch of the Sailors’ Society.
