[ MANY IRON WORKS REMAIN OPEN, RUT OFFICE STAFFS ALONE ARE ON DUTY. By TH-egraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Aus. and 14. Z. Cable Association. (Received Mav 4. 9.55 a.m.) SYDNEY, May 4. Hitherto trouble over the forty-four-hour week and federal awards was confined to the metal trades. Many iron works remain open, but the only persons on duty are the office staffs, the -foremen and apprentices. The Metal Trades Employers’ Association insists the only condition on which a resumption of work can take place is the Consent of the men to abide by the awards. The association denies the statements made in Labour circles that the men are locked out. The establishmentjs are. open to all employees who are prepared to honour the agreement. It. is reiterated that the quarrel is with thd union officials more than with the men.
