TRAINING COLLEGE STUDENTS ARRIVE FOR TOURNAMENT.

VISITORS WELCOMED TO CITY OF PLAINS.

At the Peterborough Street Tlall this morning the visiting students from Wellington who are taking part in the tournament between the Christchurch and Wellington 'l raining Colleges were welcomed by the principal and the students of the Christchurch Training College. Air E. H. Andrews, in welcoming the Wellington students, said that the annual tournament was an event that was greatly looked forward to by the students of Christchurch, and in the past it had established itself as a function which did great work in bringing together the two colleges, both on the field of sport and on the social side. Things were not so good in his day, he said. Then sport was not so well organised, and social functions .were few and far between. He hoped that the various games would be contested in ’"the best of spirits, as they had always been in the past. The students, he continued, should never overlook the serious side of their position, and that was that in years to come they would have the moulding of the children of the nation, whose interests could never be too seriously considered. Mr R. J. Carlcton, the president of the Christchurch Training College Students’ Association, assured the Wellington visitors that no effort would be neglected to ensure that they had an enjoyable time while in. Christchurch. He hoped that in the games the better teams would win. Mr J. Purchase, Principal of the Christchurch College, suggested that the visitors should see as much of the outlying portions of the city as possible. They should take advantage of the opportunity to visit the Port Hills and see the road taken in early times by the Canterbury Pilgrims, who did so much for education in the province. Pie extended an invitation to them to visit the new buildings of the Christchurch College. .Mr E. K. Lomas. Principal of the Wellington Training College, said that in the past the contests had been clean and hard, and that was what was wanted this year. In spite of the fact that the numbers of the Wellington stud- [ ents had decreased, they would show Christchurch that they were capable of great things in the line of sport. Mr L. Sanard, president of the Wellington Students’ Association, said that they had been looking forward for a long time to the trip, and that the warmth of their welcome gave promise of a dclighful stay in the City of the Plains.
