RUMOUR WINS A PRIZE OF £5/5/-.

OXFORD SHOCKED BY A LIE OR TWO.

LONDON, March IS. A rumour that “caused a stir in the aesthetical* dovecotes,” has won the first prize in the “Rumour” Competition started by the Isis, the undergraduates' weekly journal. The rules of the competition stated that each rumour must be absolutely untrue, and must have been well circulated in Oxford. Mr Robert Kirkby, of Brasenose, gained the first prize of five guineas for the following rumour: “Games in future are to be made compulsory' in the ’Varsity:, beginning from _next term or the term after. A book will be kept in each porter's lodge, in which every member of the college must enter his name at least twice a week as having participated in some form of strenuous outdoor sport. “WORRIED.” “A system of college games’ supervisors on the lines of public school prefects will be established to deal with delinquents in a suitable manner. This is in order tO' stamp out the sestheticism which has grown so prevalent that the authorities are extremely worried.” Another rumour which was said to have claimed a number of victims at Oxford was that “ an Oxford branch of the Mormon movement, originating in one of the women’s colleges, has been founded in Oxford.”

This was sent in anonymously, but the rumour, which was felt to be too good to be true, was that proctors were going to be abolished.
