1,000,000 MINERS OUT ON STRIKE IN BRITAIN.

WHOLE TRADE UNION MOVEMENT SAID TO BE BACKING MEN IN FIGHT. The coal strike, which threatened Britain last year and was averted by the Government promising a subsidy—which has cost the country about £l9,ooo,ooo—has now commenced and threatens to be of a catastrophic nature. It is stated that never before has a strike occurred when all parties were so prepared for eventualities. The strike leaders have selected certain vital trades to bear the first brunt of the contest, which Mr Ramsay MacDonald declares is an unnecessary, wicked and criminal fight. It is stated that the whole trade union movement is behind the miners. The chairman of the Trades Union Conference avers that 3,653,527 members support the Council’s policy and only 19,911 oppose it. The immediate consequences of the strike will be the addition of a millon to the ranks of Britain’s unemployed.
