THE Best Story I have Heard

by

Walter Helsdon.

TT was Christmas Eve at a JL Scotsman’s house. Scotsmen are Kindly souls, but they’ve got a peculiar way of showing it. Sandy McGregor was ultra-Scottish, resourceful, and a staunch supporter of the “ wets.” It was about that time on Christmas Eve that Santa Claus pays his visits to the houses of all the Englishmen, Irishmen and Americans of the world. Sandy knew that the bairns were waiting for the bewhiskered old fake; but he was sure that no Santa Claus was going to call at his house that night. In the kitchen he secured a bottle of “ Scotch ” from the cupboard; with a sudden twist and a jerk he withdrew the cork, and the pop that accompanied the action caused the children to cry out, “ Wha’s wrong, faither?” “ Wha’s wrong?” ejaculated Sandy, the resourceful one. “ Wha’s wrong—Santy Claus has gone an’ shot hissel.” Mr J. K. Moloney, well-known sport, will tell a story for “ Star ” readers on Monday.
