Mr and Mrs Bert Templeton (Ladbrooks) are visiting Dunedin. Mrs Anstiss and family, accompanied by Miss Bruce, have left for Dunedin. Mrs George Ellis, Marlborough, has left for Dunedin. Mrs R. B. Bell, Wai-iti Road, Timaru, is visiting Christchurch. Mrs Harold Richards has returned to “ The Point,” after a short visit to Christchurch. Dr Elinor Baker MacLaglan is the guest of Mrs C. A. Paterson, Sefton Street, Timaru. Mrs French and the Misses French, St Albans, are spending a short holiday in Dunedin. Mrs W. G. Fletcher, who has-been spending a month’s holiday in Wellington and Christchurch, has returned to Auckland. Mr G. W. Forbes, M.P., accompanied by Mrs Forbes, will attend the complimentary social to Mr T. E. Seddon, M.P., at Hokitika next Wednesday. Mrs K. G. Turner, who has been the guest of Mrs F. A. Raymond, Timaru, will return to Christchurch this evening. Mrs Thomas Richardson, formerly Miss May Hamilton, of Christchurch, has returned to London from Yorkshire, and is living at Wandsworth Common. Dr Mott and party, who arrived in town from Dunedin last night, are staying at the Clarendon Hotel until Tuesday, when they will leave for a student leaders’ conference at Wellington. Mr R. E. Davie and his mother, who have been travelling in Italy and France, where they spent a month in a charming fishing village in a littlevisited part of the Riviera, are now settled again in Paris, states an exchange. The engagement is announced by cable from New York of Miss Noeline M. S. Bruce, M.A., F.R.G.S., daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Selwyn Bruce, of Christchurch, to Mr Allon Peebles, lecturer at Barnard College, Columbia University, New York. The marriage will take place in June. The following are among the recent arrivals at the Hotel Federal: —Mr M’Naughton, Greymouth; Mr R. E. Berry, Christchurch; Mr M’Kinlay, Benhar; E. M. Binstead, Mrs and Miss Nicoll, Auckland; Mr and Mrs B. Royle, Miss Clay. Mr and Mrs Currie, Mr Teplitsky, Wellington; and Mrs and Miss Luki, Auckland.

On Thursday evening a very enjoyable time was spent at the home of Mr and Mrs J. J. Archer, 138, Knowles Street, where a surprise party was given by the Misses Carter. The evening passed with musical items, games and competitions. Amongst the guests were:—Mr and Mrs Gale, Mrs Carter, Misses Hooker, D. Hooker, M. Carter, D. Carter, V. Carter, A. Gale, P. Gale, E. Stevenson and Messrs E. Jeffs, S. Bell, E. Morton and E. Robertson. Enthusiasm is being displayed in connection with the dance to be given by Manuel Hyman and his Exhibition Band at the Winter Garden next Tuesday. No trouble is being spared in making this function one of the most successful yet held here. The orchestra was chosen out of all the New Zealand bands to play at the Exhibition and their association of six months has made their combination well nigh perfect. Each man is an artjst on his instrument, so that, on the musical side alone, a treat is in store for those who are fortunate enough to be present. An additional attraction will be a grand jazz ballet by the pupils of Miss MacDonald. Tickets, which are limited, should be obtained immediately at The Bristol.

The Rev D. Gardner Miller and Mrs Miller were the guests of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Christchurch branch of the London Missionary Society at the monthly meeting held last Wednesday in the Trinity Congregational Church. Miss B. M. Harband welcomed Mrs Miller as vice-president of the auxiliary, and on behalf of the members presented her with a bouquet of roses. Afternoon tea was served, and Mr Miller then spoke on pioneer mission work in equatorial Africa, where Dr Albert Schwetzer, the famous organist and theologian, is devoting himself to medical work, more especially in the direction of combating the deadly sleeping sickness. Apologies for absence were received from the president, Mrs Sarginson, of Linwood, Mrs Lowry, of Tennyson Street, and Mrs Wickenden, of the Trinity Congregational Church.

Mr and Mrs Samuel Barker, of England, left Christchurch this morning for Dtfnedin. Miss Bathgate has returned to Waiau after a brief visit to Christchurch. Mrs Claude Sawtell, Cashel Street, is spending a short holiday in WellingMrs D. V. Croker and Mrs C. V. Mann (Wellington) are sta3'ing at the Clarendon Hotel. Mr and Mrs O. S. Williams and Miss Morris (Gisborne) are guests at Warner’s Hotel. Mrs T. A. Phillips, The Point, has returned to her home in South Canterbury. Mrs Walter Eder, sen., and her three grandchildren, have returned to Sefton after a visit to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs Roy Eder and little daughter (Sefton), have returned home from a holiday spent on the West Coast. Miss Rosingrave (Wellington) accompanied Miss M. Greenan, of Doyleston, are the guests of Mrs J. M’Anulty, Methven. Mr and Mrs J. B. Blair (Dunedin), and Mr and Mrs S. Robinson (Auckland) are guests at the United Service Hotel. Mr and Mrs Williams, Miss Williams and Miss Morris, of Gisborne, who have been spending a few days in Christchurch, left for Hanmer to-day. Miss Margery Hicklin, Mr Jack Cannot, and Mr J. Steyne, members of the J. C. Williamson Company are staying at the Rotherfield Hotel. Mr and Mrs Clarence Turner, (Auckland), who have been to Dunedin, are the guests of Mrs T. E. Bowes, Springfield Road. Mr and Mrs George Gee, Mr and Mrs Leyland Hodgson, and Miss Dorothy Lena (London), of the J. C. Williamson Company arrived in Christchurch this morning and are registered at the United Service Hotel. Mrs Bert Royle and her niece, Miss Clay, arrived in Christchurch last evening after a brief visit to the Dunedin Exhibition, and are amongst the guests at the Federal. They will return to Wellington on Monday night. The Come-in Club, which had a successful session last winter, will reopen to-day. The club rooms in Worcester Street are very convenient, and the prospects for a pleasant winter are most promising. The club will be open for the same hours as last year. A meeting of the St Mary’s Young Men’s Guild was held in the guild hall, Park Road, Addington, when some twenty-two members were present. The Rev Canon Bean presided. Officers elected for the ensuing year were:—President, Rev. Canon Bean; vice-presidents, Messrs V. H. Leine, W. Griffiths, H. Hancock, W. H. Ede, S. Smith and Burtt; committee—Messrs Hills, Saunders, Gyde, Giblet, Fisher, Teney and Ede; secretary, Mr A. S. Williamson; treasurer, Mr F. Wall.

A meeting of the Christchurch Ladies’ Amateur Athletic and Sports Club was held on Thursday evening in Madame Alwyn*s Physical Culture Rooms, and was largely attended. The club is now on a good foundation, and is growing each week. It has been decided to encourage the girls as much as possible in every branch of sport, and they are hoping to be able to challenge the Wellington girls next season in running, hurdle, swimming gjid rowing races. The girls are very enthusiastic on rowing, and some are even having a practice during their lunch hour. It is hoped that by the next rowing season one or two four-oared crews will be at work. The girls have arranged for another dance to be given in the Ridgely Hall on Thursday evening next, by which they hope to raise funds for the club. Fuller details will be advertised.

A surprise party which took the form of-a “ kitchen evening ” recently visited the residence of Mrs E. Strachan, Spreydon. The party was given in honour of Miss D. Strachan, on the occasion of her approaching marriage. Games and competitions were indulged in, the music being supplied by Messrs R. Crawford, W. Farmer and G. Jackson. Miss Strachan was the recipient of many useful gifts, the opening of which caused a great deal of amusement. Mr Henderson thanked the visitors on behalf of Miss Strachan. The competitions were won by Miss N. Burnett and Miss H. Metcalf. Amongst those present were:—Mr and Mrs L. Anderson, Mr and Mrs H. Metcalf, Mesdames E. Strachan, L.
