TO-MORROW’S FOOTBALL SHOULD BE LIVELY.

GAINING BY EXPERIENCE, CITY CLUBS ARE FIELDING STRONGER TEAMS

Prospects for to-morrow s below:— RUGBY CODE. OLD RIVALS TO FIGHT ON OVAL. The third series of matches m Jhe first round of, the Canterbury Rugby Union's senior competition will De piaved to-morrow. The three game, are'set down for decision at Lancaster Park as follows: — Christchurch v. Old Boys, on the Merivale v. ’Varsity, on the South ground. . Albion v. Lin wood, on the West ground. , Old Boys, Merivale and Linwood are the favourites. OLD BOYS v. CHRISTCHURCH. The game between Christchurch and Old Bovs is exciting a tremendous amount of interest, and it is sure to at tract a large crowd of spectators meeting between these two old trials is eaeerlv looked forward to by the iootbaU fans. Both teams go m for the fast, open style of play, g ‘ a dry ground and fine weather P_ tacuiar exhibition of footltall shoula result from to-morrows match The two teams are evenl) matched and there is not likely to be much between them when the final whistle sounds. Old Boys are the favourites though, after their game against Lin wood last Saturday, some followers oi the game are less inclined to be ®on fidcnt of the success of the it hite. against Christchurch. In the opcmns match this season against \ arsiti Old Boys went well and won easily D 5

Si points to 8. Last Saturday, however, Linwood gave Old Boys a \el-5 - run for their money and the . final score was onlv 13 points to 8 m favour of Old Boys. Still, Old Boys ate a hard team to beat, and they may be expected to "go all out” to-morrow. Christchurch, too. are very keen to win. They have a good team this year, both back and forward. Last . aturday acainst ’Varsity they won handsomely be 24 points to 5. and the previous Saturday they beat Albion by 2S points tU The Christchurch team wi” be much the same as that which played \ arsity last Saturday. Some changes bate been made in the forwards G Leahy was unable to play last Saturday on account of ill-health, but it is expected that he will be fit for to-morrow s contest. W. Melvin, who was away from Christchurch last Saturday . will

be playing to-morrow, and his partner in the front rank of the scrum will be Feast. II- Feast was put into the team last week to hook with Galbraith in place of Melvin. The selectors have now decided to retain Feast and drop Galbraith. P. Kirby is turning out to-morrow. He is to play m the back of the scrum in place ot Frame. Kirby was one of the best of the Christchurch forwards last 3’ e ar and he should help to strengthen the pack to-morrow. If Leahy is unable to turn out to-morrow. Bacon will play lock and Frame will be given a place in the pack. There will probably be no changes in the Christchurch back division. Last Saturday Cowlishaw was dropped and his place on the wing was taken by Fyfe. Fyfe did not get a great deal to do against ’Varsity, but what he did get to do he did well, and the selectors have decided to retain him in the position. Lance Johnson, the All Black five-eighths from Wellington. who has joined up with the Christchurch Club, will not be able to play for them to-morrow as he has not the necessary residential qualification. It is expected that the Old Boys team will be the same as that which met Linwood last Saturday. There is some doubt about S. R. Carleton being able to play on account of an injured knee. However, it is expected that he will able to turn out. The loss of Carleton would be a serious one to Old Boys. He is in great form this year and he was probably the best back on the ground in the Old Boys v. Linwood match last week.

In connection with the game between Old Boys and Christchurch to-morrow * it is interesting to recall that last sea- p son these two teams fought out two I very closely contested games. The first « one was won by Christchurch by 10 c points to 8, and in the second Old < Boys proved the victors by 3 points > to nil, a try scored by J. Low, over 1 which there, was a great deal of dispute, being the deciding factor. < LINWOOD v. ALBION. There is likely to be a close contest in the game between Linwood and Albion. The latter are an improved team this year, and last Saturday they •prang a surprise by defeating Merivale by 7 points to C. On the opening Saturday Merivale beat Linwood by 19 points to 13. so that, going on results, Albion should be able to beat Linwood. This, however, is not a safe method of forecasting. The game between Merivale and Linwood was much more closely contested than the final score indicates. Linwood are an improved team this season. They have a great pack of forwards, and they arc likely to prove the deciding factor in the game, as neither side has a particularly brilliant back division. Linwood have been unfortunate this season in their backs. On the first Saturday M’Kav. first five-eighths, was injured, and he has not been able to play since Then last Satxirday N. Wogan, the Linwood centre three quarter. sustained a broken leg. This was particularly unfortunate for Linwood because Wogan. who is a new member of the club, had shown a great deal of promise. These two accidents have disarranged the Linwood back division. and experiments have had to be made. To-morrow Linwood are trying a new full-back. G. O'Reilly, who has been promoted from the senior B team. Brown, who came on as full-back for Linwood after Wogan was injured last Saturday, is not able to play on account of his injured knee. It gave him trouble after the game a week ago. This is unfortunate, for Linwood, because Brown would easily be the best man tor full-back if he were quite fit.

The Linwood three quarter lino to-p-sorrow will consist of M - Eh v. J. Payne and L. Cornaga. with Deidrich and W. Columbus five eighths, and A. Millar halfback. This is an experimental combination, and it is difficult to say how it will go. Last Saturday Deidrich. It first five eighths, did not combine too well with Millar, and so ( olumbus has been pu£ in this place.

football matches are reviewed 1 for Linwood last season. The Linwood pack is the same as ( that which played last Saturday, ex- ] cept that M. M’Duff, a brother of A. M’Duff, has been promoted from the ; senior B team to take the place of A. Morrow, who is out of town. JTurpin will be the Linwood wing forward. At the time of writing the Albion team had not been definitely picked, but there may be one or two changes, especially in the forwards. Crotty, the Albion wing forward, was injured last week, and it is unlikely that he will be able to turn out to-morrow. Brian M'Cleary, who was injured on the opening Saturday, was unable to play against Merivale a week ago. but it is expected that he will be able to. take his place in the Albion pack again tomorrow. He should prove a useful man against the powerful Linwood forwards. MERIVALE v. VARSITY. The game between Merivale and Varsity should result in a fairly easy win for Merivale. Varsity, however, should not be taken too cheaply. It is true that this season they have suffered heavy defeats at the hands cf Old Boys and Christchurch, but Merivale do not look to be as good as either of these teams. The Merivale back division has been a bit disorganised this season, owing to the fact that thev unable to find a suitable full-back. L. Duggan was tried in that position last Saturday, and he filled it well, but Merivale find that his services are of more use in the forwards, and to-mor-row he will take his place in the pack again. Hart is the Merivale full-back for to-morrow. He is really better suited to the three-quarter line, but apparently he is the only full-back available. G. Johnstone is to be tried out as wing three-quarter. Doreen will be on the other wing, and Nome centre. As far as the other back positions ate concerned, there have been no changes, and the forwards also are much about the same. Loveridge. the A arsity centre three.quarter. will be unable to play tomorrow. At the time of writing it was not certain who would fill his place. It is possible that Shaw will be put in as centre and that Barak will be moved i from the scrum to second five-eighths. In that case Ellis will probably hook with Thompson. The altrenative is to move one of the senior B : backs up to take Loveridge’s place. • If the first proposition would work L it seems to’ be the better one of the - two as it would save interfering with ; the back division of the senior B team. r Apart from Loveridge. the Varsity l team to-morrow will be much the same r as usual.
