BOXING SCANDAL.

WERE FIGHTERS BRIBED? BRISBANE, April 15. 1 A s£n&ati©n has been caused irt fistic circles in Brisbane by the allegation that unscrupluous betting men are operating at the Brisbane • Stadium. An offer Is alleged to have been

made to one well-known boxer to lie down last Saturday week, and now it is alleged that last Saturday night one of the boxers at the Stadium was offered £3O to pul! up. Both bribes are declared to have been refused. It is stated that it is only on rare occasions that any main Saturday night fixture is viewed with suspicion, since the contestants usually are well paid, and are ambitious. Preliminary fighters and mid-week boxers, however, are frequently approached. As they do not receive big money they are considered approachable. It is stated that not a long while ago one preliminary fighter, whose payment from the management was only £2 10s, received £l6 for acceding to the request of an unscrupulous layer of odds to “take one on the chin.” The Stadium manager has expressed his determination to get to the bottom of the allegations, with the intention of refusing admittance to those concerned. It is considered, however, that the curtailment of the present unrestricted ringside betting would remedy the scandal. The inactivity of the police is regarded as puzzling. It is pointed out that the authorities have been ruthlessly cleaning up street and shop betting, yet large sums change hands under their very eyes at the Stadium.
