An Inquiry into the aeroplane disaster at Papanui on March 17 was to have been commenced this week, as it was believed that Lieut. P. A. Turner, who survived the crash with severe injury, would be discharged from the hospital, and would be strong enough to give evidence. This a.fternrdbn, however, it was learned from the police that Lieut. Turner’s condition was still weak. He is in a highly nervous state, and the inquiry has been postponed. It ‘will probably be held in about ten days, when it is hoped that Lieut. Turner will be quite fit. TZMARU RACES. Smithfleld Handicap—Clontarf 1, Bugle Note 2, Booster 3. All started. SKIPPING STRIKE. There are prospects of a settlement of the shipping strike at Lyttelton. At the conference to-day, arranged by and presided over by the Mayor of Lyttelton, Mr F. E. Sutton, certain proposals were agreed to, and these will be submitted to the Lyttelton Waterside Workers’ Union at a special meeting to-morrow morning at eight o’clock. After this meeting it is expected by tbe Conference that work will he fully resumed at the Port. A further conference to discuss the matters in dispute will be held at Wellington next week.
